Polymer science has developed rapidly and has had a profound impact on society in the last few decades. The availabihty of thousands of different monomers and the almost limitless possibihties arising from their different eombinations have allowed polymer scientists to produce numerous novel materials with desired applications, ranging from very simple materials for use as bulk commodities to highly sophisticated ones with specific biomedical, engineering or nano(bio)technological uses. [Pg.146]

Nano-polymers are attractive materials for both biomedical engineering and medical applications. Rational design of nano-polymer carrier geometry will help optimize customized tissue and cell targeted therapeutics. Further imderstanding of how nano-polymers interact both in vivo and in vitro with different cells will open new horizons in nano-medicine. It is easily foreseeable that designer nano-polymers can be tailored to induce favorable cell response, in order to precisely intervene in disease mechanism. [Pg.112]

Hot-wire anemometers ( Micro/Nano-Anemometers ) have been developed for a wide spectrum of applications from experimental fluid mechanics to aerospace engineering to measure physical parameters such as temperature, flow rate, and shear stress. The advent of microelec-tromechanical systems (MEMS) and nanoscale thermal sensors has provided an entry point to microfluidics, biomedical sciences, and microcirculation in cardiovascular medicine. These MEMS and nanoscale devices are fabricated... [Pg.1779]

In addition to the technical and commodity applications [38], another important opportunity for the application of the polymer nano-sized materials is their use for biomedical purposes. As mentioned in the Section 9.1, organ transplantation nowadays practically has no technical problems - the main problem is the lack of donors, and this problem is solved by the tissue engineering. The latter uses scaffolds from polymer materials with specific properties formulated at the beginning of the chapter. [Pg.229]
