N studies

Aldehydes and unhindered ketones undergo a nucleophilic addition reaction with HCN to yield cyanohydrins, RCH(OH)C=N. Studies carried out in the early 1900s by Arthur Eapworth showed that cyanohydrin formation is reversible and base-catalyzed. Reaction occurs slowly when pure HCN is used but rapidly when a small amount of base is added to generate the nucleophilic cyanide ion, CN. Alternatively, a small amount of KCN can be added to HCN to catalyze the reaction. Addition of CN- takes place by a typical nucleophilic addition pathway, yielding a tetrahedral intermediate that is protonated by HCN to give cyanohydrin product plus regenerated CN-.

In the past few decades food production has increased through plant breeding, fertiiizer use, mechanized farming, and chemical pest control. The most recent U.N. study, the FAO World Food Report, indicated that 1984 food production was greater than 1983. But the report noted that further improvements will be required if food production is to keep pace with population growth. One area for potential improvement is the control of weeds. We have been working on a novel approach to weed control, and find the preliminary results encouraging. 

Since that time, however, a comprehensive N study of azoles has been completed (840MR(22)215>. Significant increases in the nitrogen shielding were observed for the parent benzothiadiazole (1) (-1-49 ppm) and the parent 1,2,5-thiadiazole (2) (-1-34 ppm). In contrast, the corresponding oxa-diazoles were highly deshielded benzooxadiazole (8) ( — 36 ppm) and 1,2,5-oxadiazole (9) ( — 34 ppm).

Dolukhanyan et al.n studied the combustion of transition metals (zirconium in particular) in hydrogen, for the production of the corresponding hydrides. The interesting phenomena here, was the relatively low combustion temperatures measured (compared to other gas-solid or solid-solid systems) in the range 700-1450 K, depending on the metal system and the amount of solid phase dilution. These systems were also characterized by an after-burning stage. 

To conclude, the efficacy of Cl-IB-MECA in several tumor animal models, especially HCC, prompted the introduction of this molecule into a program of pre-clinical and clinical studies. The excellent safety profile in pre-clinical animal studies and human Phase I in healthy subjects led to the initiation of Phase I/n studies in patients with HCC, currently ongoing.

The molecular recognition ability of Pd(II)-5-Br-PADAP for the isomers of diazine derivatives has been evaluated. Figure 10.14 summarizes the molecular structures of the diazines (Dzs or N) studied, the acid-dissociation constant Kf) and the distribution constant values between toluene and water Kd). PdLCl reacted with a neutral N with one or two nitrogen atoms, forming a PdLN" complex at the toluene/water interface.
