Myths relationships

The relationship between medicine and biochemistry has important imphcations for the former. As long as medical treatment is firmly grounded in a knowledge of biochemistry and other basic sciences, the practice of medicine will have a rational basis that can be adapted to accommodate new knowledge. This contrasts with unorthodox health cults and at least some alternative medicine practices, which are often founded on httle more than myth and wishftil thinking and generally lack any intellectual basis. [Pg.2]

In reviewing relationships with adult children, three myths must be dispelled. [Pg.165]

Myth 2 The second myth is that conflict within families is always bad and should be avoided. Some conflict and negotiation is present in all relationships and should be anticipated. Too often parents avoid problems that need to be discussed because they fear conflict. The same is true, perhaps more so, with adult children. Confronting problems can be healthy otherwise they may remain unsolved for years. [Pg.166]

The weird properties that came to be associated with quantum systems, because of the probability doctrine, obscured the simple mathematical relationship that exists between classical and quantum mechanics. The lenghthy discussion of this aspect may be of less interest to chemical readers, but it may dispel the myth that a revolution in scientific thinking occured in 1925. Actually there is no break between classical and non-classical systems apart from the relative importance of Planck s action constant in macroscopic and microscopic systems respectively. Along with this argument goes the realization that even in classical mechanics, as in optics, there is a wave-like aspect associated with all forms of motion, which becomes more apparent, at the expense of particle behaviour, in the microscopic domain. [Pg.327]

Just as evidence of historical attraction between white women and black men has been largely tuned out [Stephens claims that substantial numbers of white women and black men came together of their own free wiU (3 7)], our view of relations between white men and black women have been reduced to a myth of original sin—a collective rape which caused a national stain, a racial guilt which can never be washed away. A more balanced view would acknowledge that sexual relations between whites and blacks almost always took place under unequal power relations, but on a spectrum.. . . And one must concede that, at the far end of the spectrum from rape, there were some interracial relationships that grew out of, or led to, love (38). [Pg.103]

The description of thermomechanical and thermoelectrical measurements in a modest chapter such as this is an ambitious exercise. The author has attempted to cover a wide range of methods and applications with the intention of illustrating the diversity of this field whilst emphasising the relationships between the static techniques (such as TMA and TSCA) and the dynamic techniques (dynamic force TMA, DMA and DETA). With the exception of TMA, these methods are often promoted as some of the more advanced thermal analysis techniques. It is hoped that the preceding pages help to dispel this myth without belittling their ability to measure useful properties. [Pg.126]

The Council for Chemical Research, CCR, is addressing the complex problems that places this happy story in the category of myth. The Council s makeup positions it uniquely to address the issues that stand in the way of a productive relationship between academia and industry as detailed below. But first some provocative statements and some history that will set the stage for what CCR has been able to accomplish towards improving the industri-al/academic interface. [Pg.170]

Myth 2 There is a relationship between the numbers of SRB and the rate of corrosion the higher the numbers, the more severe the corrosion. [Pg.98]

Another paper that deserves the symbolism of a milestone is that of Patterson (1981), Significance of Fossils in Determining Evolutionary Relationships. In this paper Patterson (1981 218) wrote, "... instances of fossils overturning theories of relationship based on Recent organisms are very rare, and may be non-existent. It follows that the wide-spread belief that fossils are the only, or best, means of determining evolutionary relationships is a myth. ... [Pg.169]

Psychoanalytic feminist criticism, of which Abel s and Defromont s is some of the most subtle and powerful, has extended the implications of Freud s accormt of the pre-Oedipal realm of the mother-daughter dyad and of maternal plenitude, finding in Woolf s work, and in To the Lighthouse in particular, some of its most compelling explorations and representations. There is a difference, however, between critics for whom there is something like a lost female homeland and those, like Mary Jacobus, for whom the pre-Oedipal relationship with the mother is a myth rather than a place to which women could or should seek to return. As Jacobus writes in First Things ... [Pg.171]
