Musky

Sometimes a skilled peifumei detects a sandalwood-musky note in authentic Bulgarian otto of rose. This note has been identified (11) as the trace iagredient, 7-methoxy-3,7-dimethyl-2-octanol [41890-92-0] (17), which has been commercially available for some time as Ossyrol (trademark of Bush, Boake, Aken Inc). This compound had never before been identified ia nature, but demonstrates how, sometimes, synthetic fragrance chemists can anticipate nature. [Pg.301]

In 1969, a-methylcyclopentadecanoHde [4459-57-8] was isolated from galbanum (49). In 1978, three additional a-methyl macroHdes, a-methylcyclododecanoHde [71736-24-8] a-methylcyclotridecanoHde [27198-63-6] and a-methylcyclotetradecanoHne [32539-85-8] were characterized as galbanum constituents (50). These four undoubtedly contribute to the musky undertone of galbanum. [Pg.313]

Elder has a hard white wood that is resilient yet easy to hollow out. Carpenters have long employed it, enjoying its close grains and the fact that it polishes easily. The wood has a pleasant musky smell. The wood has also been used for fishing rod parts, fishing floats, needles for net weaving, shoemaker s pegs, combs, bows, skewers and small toys. [Pg.23]

Science, politics, labor relations, philosophy, music, literature, and sports—it seemed that everything interested Carothers. Soon after Sinclair Lewis novel Babbitt was published in 1920, he praised it as a literal depiction of Midwestern conformity and provincialism. When Marvel introduced him to fly-fishing in the Wisconsin woods, Carothers loved it. Although friends often found it difficult to tell when Carothers was pleased and happy, he was so excited trying to land a muskie from a rowboat that he almost jumped in after the fish. [Pg.114]

Although Patterson insisted that he had no political acumen, he continued his campaign to reach the people who could affect public policy. That fall, he wrote to Senator Edmund S. Muskie of Maine, who chaired the Senate Special Subcommittee on Air and Water. Muskie had just spent two years holding public hearings throughout the United States on air quality he would be the Democratic vice presidential candidate in 1968 and a pres-... [Pg.187]

Muskie s public hearing, held in Washington, D.C., in June 1966, revealed that 480,000 of petroleum industry money was helping to finance a Bureau of Mines study of antiknock compounds. With no funds to conduct its own research, the government agency had agreed to publish the petroleum-funded study only if the American Petroleum Institute approved its contents. [Pg.188]

When Patterson finished, Muskie quickly summarized Patterson s entire testimony in a sound bite In your statement there is a sentence, and I quote It is possible that deleterious effects to the health of large numbers of people are being caused by these high levels of exposure. That appears to be the question which you raise. ... [Pg.189]

Fruits have received extensive study one example is that of the passion fruit volatiles. Another fruit in which sulfur volatiles play an aroma role is musk-melon (Cucumis melo cv. Makdimon). Synthetic musks are also desirable in consumer products because of their fixative properties. Much as they are classified into these two groups, the members within each group of synthetic musks are quite diverse and do not have a common chemical stmctme. Thus, even within each group, musks cannot be tmated as a single entity in terms of characteristics except for the musky scent common to aU musks. Cosmetics application and absorption from textiles is a major somce of HHCB and AHTN, materials that end up in the environment (Cadby et al., 2002). [Pg.10]

For most specific anosmias the individual differences represent a concentration effect that is anosmic individuals will recognize the odor at some higher level of exposure. However, in the case of an stenone, individuals d it either unpleasant (urinous, sweaty), pleasant (floral, musky) or odorless, independent of the concentration. Surprisingly, the anosmia can be reversed in some individuals through constant exposure (57). Anosmic subjects exposed to androstenone three times per day (3 minutes) over a 6 week period became osmic to it A substantial decrease in threshold (i.e. increased sensitivity) was found for 10 of 20 subjects. [Pg.21]

Ambrette seed oil is obtained by steam distillation of the dried, crushed seeds of Ambelmoschus moschatus Medik. Hibiscus abelmoschus L., Malvaceae), a flowering shrub growing in tropical areas. Due to its content of long-chain fatty acids, the crude product is a waxy mass and, therefore, also called Ambrette beurre. Removal of the fatty acids with alkali gives a clear yellow to amber liquid with the strong, musky odor of ambrettolide. [Pg.172]
