As indicated above, detection of evoked quantal responses (either through minimal stimulation or paired recordings) provides a suitable setting to determine neurotransmitter release probability and alterations in rate of vesicle fusion. However, in synapses with multiple release sites, such as the calyx of Held, isolation of evoked quantal responses is nearly impossible and truly quantal release is hard to detect except in the case of spontaneous neurotransmission. Therefore, under these conditions, the rate of synaptic vesicle fusion can be determined by deconvolution of synaptic currents with the quantal unitary current. This approach is valid only when the synaptic current can be assumed to result from the convolution between a quantal current and quantal release rates. This assumption is not valid in cases where post-synaptic mechanisms, such as receptor saturation and desensitization, alter quantal events and thus shape synaptic responses during repetitive stimulation (Neher and Sakaba, 2001). [Pg.28]

The similarity of the temperature dependence of steady-state photocurrent in thin films to that of the transient photoconductivity in the sub-ns regime implies that, in thin films, carrier sweep-out occurs prior to deep trapping. The weak residual T-dependence above 80 K in the thinnest sample is again similar to that observed in sub-ns time-resolved experiments. In the time domain, this corresponds to the temperature dependent tail characteristic of the transient photocurrent [199]. This weak T-dependence arises from the effect of shallow traps with multiple release and retrapping during carrier sweep-out. Note that the... [Pg.152]

Ranking Unit. "Ranking unit" refers to an environmental issue at a facility. The definition of a ranking unit is derived directly from its use in the Environmental Survey. A ranking unit is a composite of similar and related environmental problems located in approximately the same geographic location. There can be, and often are, multiple ranking units at each DOE site. Each ranking unit may have multiple exposure modes (e.g., multiple release locations, different release methods, different pathways). [Pg.202]

The development of MEPAS for application to evaluations of large numbers of environmental issues based on potential health impacts is complete. Whether used to evaluate a single site with many environmental impacts, a facility with multiple releases, or a collection of facilities with releases, MEPAS is an appropriate tool for screening the relative importance of environmental issues in a scientific and objective manner. [Pg.209]
