In order to collect data via the serial port or A/D in background mode, the computer must initiate a multi-tasked routine. The limitation of this approach is the software overhead it introduces and the risk of data loss should the computer crash. When the data logger is used in background mode, the computer could be turned off and back on while a run is in progress with no loss of data. 

Process automation implies the real time acquisition and control of process variables such as temperature, agitation, material delivery, or quality control measurements. As far as the MARS system is concerned, a real time process is just like any instrument. The acquisition module merely requires more interactive monitoring, alarms, and control. This can be accomplished by means of a real time multi-tasking data acquisition module. 

Overall control is provided by the PDP-11/44, running DEC S RSX-llM operating system. RSX-llM is a multi-user multi-task operating system, and a number of other analytical instruments are interfaced to this computer system and are running concurrently. The automated Instron software is menu-driven because our experience has shown that menu-driven software is particularly effective for applications of this type. To perform either test the user accesses a main menu from which separate menus for instrument calibration, tensile tests, and flexure tests can be reached. The tensile and flexure menus have equivalent options the choices pertaining to automated testing are as follows ... 

Current Development. Following success of the prototype IPU a second more comprehensive facility was commissioned. This is capable of up to four pumps of mixed peristalitic or diaphragm types, each linked to specific feed vessels on individual balances. The whole is interfaced to an IBM AT computer (see Figure 7) which in addition to Intelligent liquid additions, has the capacity to absorb modules from the work on temperature control and stirring in a full multi-tasking computer-assisted system, as mentioned above. 

The Farinograph-E (Figure 6) uses a PC to process the data from the Farinograph this is a considerable improvement over measuring pieces of paper from a chart recorder. The software supplied runs under Windows and can multi-task so that one PC can handle data from several instruments. This is particularly convenient as the Farinograph is used to prepare doughs for the Extensograph. 

Using a high-performance, multi-tasking data system, the user can call up and work in several windows on-screen simultaneously. For example, the user can set parameters for the next sample run, view a chromatogram or spectrum and perform background acquisition of data at the same time. 

And there are practical benefits, too. Breastfeeding can be done one-handed. (Indeed, I m nursing my son as I m writing these words.) Bottle-feeding, which takes two hands, makes multi-tasking impossible. Breast milk is so digestible that comparatively little comes out the other end. Less poop. And it has no offensive odor. Really. 

Whoops, sorry I say as I rush over to flip the tortillas. I know Raoul does not like my multi-tasking approach but usually, if I time it just right, I can do something else and also get the tortillas flipped before they smoke. I quickly finish grating piles of Gruyere cheese and drop a handful on the tortillas. 

The PC operating systems used today, however, e.g. MS-DOS, are not built for and are not suited for real-time applications. The multi-task real-time operating systems, e.g. RSX11M, that have been available with the traditional 16-bit... 

This data is buffered in the main memory of these nodes and transferred blockwise to a PDP11 or to VAX computers for further processing. By this means a hierarchical partitioning of real-time tasks is possible, where the sub-tasks are assigned to different nodes within the network. A hierarchical structure can be built for a real-time application, distributed over several processors, that is very similar to a multi-task system, e.g. RSX11M, on a single processor. 

MTE [MultiTask Engineering] A process for recovering sulfur from acid gases, based on the Claus process, but using a circulating, powdered catalyst instead of the usual fixed catalyst bed. Developed by Multi-Task Engineering Ltd. in 1987 but not yet commercialized.

Mark McGuire, the former major league baseball player who holds the record for home runs in a season, is a famous user of DHEA, although he did not use it for its antidepressant abilities, instead hoping the multi-tasking hormone would improve his game. However, there is no proof that this substance is what improved his batting power. Nor is there substantial proof that DHEA reduces depression. In any case, the population that would probably receive the most benefit from this hormone is older people, who have depleted levels of DHEA. 

The procedures described and the limited amounts of materials to be produced apply to multi-task reactors only. Mono-task units lack the necessary economic basis [26] for amounts in the 100-kg range. 

The arrival of workstations (1985) and of a new multi-tasking operating system, UNIX, is at the origin of a revolution in the scientific computation that continues today. Few scientific software companies survived these dramatic changes. The reusability of the old proven FORTRAN routines in a new object oriented programming environment was critical. 

The real-time/multi-tasking operating system, that rans on the microcomputer, enables parallel processing of different tasks. When for example sampling is in progress the parameter dialog can be performed as well. The ability of parallel processing is most important if the remote interface option is installed to allow the remote computer to access the gas sampler at any time. 

Another abstraction of the hardware is the virtual machine. This has been available for decades in mainframe computers but only recently appeared in mainstream processors. The virtual machine abstraction takes virtual memory and multi-tasking a step further by more completely virtualizing the processor s capabilities. Virtual machines allow multiple operating systems to run concurrently.

The algorithm presented here is by no means the most efficient one possible. Any modification designed to increase speed, however, is likely to make the routine larger and more complex. Although this algorithm was written for virtual data, it is readily adaptable for disk-based data arrays only the calls to the window alignment routine need be replaced. Should the data be totally and explicitly disk-based, a multi-tasking FFT should be possible in which the transform calculations on one block of data occur simultaneously with the disk I/O of another block.
