Muffs

A comparison of the results achieved with the FEM Analysis and the rosetta strain gauge measurements is shown in fig. 19. Differences can be noted in areas labeled B and C. The former can be explained as an effect of the discrepancy between the actual shape of the vessel and the ideal one used in the F.E.M. model. The latter can be ascribed to the presence of a muff, located in the centre of the head of the actual vessel, which has not been taken into account in the model.

Industrial and mining settings should require ear protection (plugs or muffs) for noise above a certain decibel level, hard hats for head protection, and steel-toed shoes for foot protection. A safety harness should be worn when sampling from heights. A full protective suit should be worn when in extreme heat or cold or near hazardous chemicals. Check to see whether mechanical equipment must be shut down to sample safely. Eye or face protection should be worn if hot gases may be released to the atmosphere. In some circumstances, weather may be a factor. In the field, local terrain may require special gear.

There are two levels of protection commonly used by industrial workers to reduce noise levels [32] plugs (see Figure 2.20) and muffs (see Figure 2.21). One or both types may be used, depending on the noise levels. A third type of protection device is a helmet, commonly used by motorcycle drivers, which provides relatively little hearing protection and is rarely used in industry for hearing protection. Therefore, this is not considered further here. 

Ear muffs are designed to cover the entire ear and typically reduce levels by 5-50 dB, depending on the muff type and sound frequency. These can be used in lieu of or in addition to ear plugs. When both plugs and muffs are worn, noise protection is greater than either individually but is not additive. Muffs may be more comfortable to some compared to ear plugs. However, they may also interfere with other PPE such as hard hats. Special...

Issue safety shoes, goggles, hard hats, ear muffs, gloves, back supports, and other safety equipment and ensure that equipment is used to protect employees.
