In this case the biopolymers are directly plasticized by thermomechanical means, and transformed through the classical forming technologies of the plastic industry injection-moulding, extrusion and thermoforming. These agromaterials keep a natural aspect, they are sensitive to the atmospheric conditions like wood, but they have no shape restrictions (Figure 5.20). 

In addition to the deliberate monoaxial or biaxial orientation carried out to produce an oriented filament or sheet, orientation will often occur during polymer processing, whether desired or not. Thus in injection moulding, extrusion or calendering the shearing of the melt during flow will cause molecular orientation.

Polyethersulphone is a true thermoplastic and can be processed by all the traditional techniques we associate with thermoplastics. These include Injection moulding, blow moulding, extrusion of rod and sheet, and vacuum forming sheet into con lex shapes. PES requires slightly higher processing temperatures than those needed for most other thermoplastics but these temperatures are well within the capabilities of most modern screw... 

Admixing an additive-type flame-retardant to a polymer is not always easy. A plain blending of a granulated resin with the additive before the conventional processing (injection moulding, extrusion, etc.) does not provide appropriate homogenity in most cases unless special techniques (e.g. an internal mixer) are used beforehand. 

Polypropylene (PP) is a high-volume, low-cost plastic first commercialized in 1959 and produced by many companies. It is unusual in that it is processed in large quantities by all four major fabrication processes moulding, extrusion, film, and fibre technology. Major engineering plka-tions include pipe and automobile parts. It does not absorb water.

Abstract Injection moulding, extrusion and other processes for manufacturing polymer components are discussed. Several case studies are presented where manufacture of polymer components is crucial to product performance, such as injection-moulded polycarbonate coimectors in a catheter, cylinder guard fractures, sight tubes, a crutch failure, and ozone cracking of tubing and a condom.
