Moon, planting

Selenium was discovered in 1817 by J. J. Berzelius (1779-1848) and J. G. Gahn (1745-1818) in the sediment taken from the lead chamber of a sulfuric acid plant in Gripsholm, Sweden. Its name was derived from the Greek word aekr]vr] (selene), for moon, because of its chemical similarity to tellurium-earth. [Pg.3]

All plants depend on carbon dioxide and water for their survival, making their food by the process of photosynthesis. Carbon dioxide is found in abundance in the atmospheres of many other planets and their moons throughout the solar system. [Pg.183]

Mescaline is an alkaloid isolated from the peyote cactus, species Lophophora williamsii or Anhalonium lewinii, that grows in the southwestern United States and in Mexico. Mescaline is found in buttons that grow on top of the plant. Aztec and Native American Indians used the buttons in religious rites and for treatment of snakebite, flu, and arthritis. Some street names include bad seed, blue caps, cactus buttons, devils root, mesc, moon, peyote, shaman, and tops. [Pg.96]

Introduction of Conjugation The best example of imparting higher thermal stability through the introduction of conjugation in explosive molecules is hexanitrostilbene (HNS), synthesized by Shipp [58, 59] of the US Naval Ordnance Laboratory (NOL) in 1964. Plants for full-scale production exist in the UK and China, based on the method of Shipp [60]. It has proved its efficiency as a heat-resistant explosive as well as a component of heat-resistant formulations employed in the Apollo spaceship and for seismic experiments on the moon [61]. HNS has also been reported for use in achieving stage separation in space rockets. [Pg.89]

The vision on which this principle is based is the individual design of the holding in the context of the complex interaction of all impacting factors. The pedosphere, ecosphere and landscape, as well as the atmosphere and the cosmic environment (apart from the sun, these are primarily the moon and the planets) form the natural basis. Crop plants, livestock, the farmer as well as the entire socioeconomic environment have an effect at all levels of this natural environment, are influenced by these levels, and thus form an intricate interrelationship. A farm, therefore, becomes an individuality in which the various factors, just like... [Pg.141]

Occurrence.—Although a relatively rare element, selenium is fairly widespread in nature,1 being frequently found in small quantities both in the combined state in pyrites and sulphide ores 2 and also in the free state in the volcanic sulphur deposits 3 of Italy, Hawaii and the Lipari Islands. In the sulphur deposits the selenium is usually present in the form of an isomorphous mixture with the sulphur. Its occurrence in Swedish pyrites (from Falun) led to the discovery of the element by J. J. Berzelius in 1817,4 during an examination of the deposit formed in the lead chambers of a sulphuric acid plant. Owing to the striking chemical resemblance of the new element to tellurium (see p. 351), Berzelius assigned it the name selenium (Gk. selene, the moon), which, in order to indicate the metalloid nature of the element, is sometimes modified into selenion. [Pg.286]

In a model developed to analyze the trade-off between scale advantages from product-focused factories and reduced transport costs from market-focused factories Cohen and Moon (1991) and Moon (1989) consider a fixed charge incurred for each product-plant allocation and a concave production cost function. The cost function is transformed into a piecewise linear function. In a model developed for the paper industry, Philpott and Everett (2001, pp. 229-230) use pre-determined product mix "clusters" that are selected using binary variables and for which the effects on unit production costs and technical capacity are specified exogenously to model scope effects. [Pg.78]

Some of the elements of war have found a place in peacetime. The same kind of reaction in uranium that makes an atomic bomb explode can be controlled to make electricity in a nuclear power plant. The Cassini spacecraft now orbiting the planet Saturn runs on plutonium fuel. Plutonium-based fuel was also used to power devices that the Apollo 14 astronauts left on the Moon, such as a seismometer left to detect movements of the Moons crust. The Voyager spacecraft also sent its golden record out to the stars with... [Pg.61]

With an eye to the Sun and Moon s disposition, we gather some fresh Rosemary, chop it finely and place it into a flask with a little water to make paste. We let it stand awhile to loosen up, then steam is injected into the herb paste and the hot vapors arising are captured in a cooling condenser. This distillate contains water from the steam and floating on the water will form a layer of oil—the essential oil of Rosemary. This oil we collect. It is the first of the Three Essentials and represents what the alchemists called the Alchemical Sulfur of the plant. The oil is a material analog or vehicle for the subtle principle of Sulfur, the Soul or character of the plant. [Pg.26]
