To get an impression of which journals are the most read and cited, the Institute of Scientific Information (Philadelphia, PA, USA) provides two interesting indicators [Journal Citation Reports, Science Edition]. The impact factor for a given journal is the number of citations in that year to articles published by the journal in the two previous years. Thus, if each article published in, for example, either 1998 or 1999 is cited exactly once in 2000, the journal will have an impact factor of 1 in that year. Authors use impact factors to decide where to submit their publications. For specialized journals, e.g. those focusing on catalysis, impact factors of 3 and higher are considered high. Review journals usually have higher impact factors, whereas letter journals usually score lower. [Pg.20]

The quantities RME and (Sheldon environmental impact factor or -factor based on mass) ° are related by a simple expression given by equation (4.4) which allows easy calculation of either parameter once one of them is known. It is often simpler to determine Em first and then to use equation (4.4) to calculate RME. The derivation of equation (4.4) is linked to that of equation (4.1) and is also given in Appendix B. [Pg.73]

The goals of most LCA have been limited to determination of the impact of the fluid milk process on GHG emissions and energy due to the availability of relevant data and guidelines from the IPCC and other government agencies. Data for conducting LCA of the other impact factors such as water use, aquatic toxicity, human health, and land use are scarce, but new initiatives to reduce the impact of dairy production in... [Pg.47]

The data situation for additives in LCIA seems to be somewhat better than for the LCI [4]. Characterization factors exist for a number of additives and for a number of impact categories. Nevertheless, the fist is nowhere near complete. Especially for the impact categories of human toxicity and ecotoxicity, impact factors are missing. Approaches exist to calculate such factors based on substance characteristics. In this volume, LCIA factors are derived for a large number of additives based on such approaches [5]. The lack of such factors, therefore, seems to be less of a problem for including additives in LCA case studies than the lack of LCI data. [Pg.11]
