In the main part of the book, detailed mono-graph,s of 181 drugs arc set out concerning the arrangement of these monographs, see the section Important Indications for the Reader of Tlris Book (pp., 1 et seq.). 

Up till now (July 1988), over 200 monographs, including more than 140 drug monographs have been published and additional ones have been prepublished. 

Although the information is important, especially for the manufacturer of phytophar-maceuticals, it should also interest the pharmacist and doctor which indications, contraindications, side effects, interactions, dosages, manner of use, and effects are, as it were, officially recognized in some cases, where the evidence is insufficient, the Commission E came to the conclusion not to advocate therapeutic use - this, of course, in no way prohibits their use, but the pharmacist in his discussions with his clients will be hesitant in recommending or will inform them of the fact. Since the information regarding the constituents of the drugs in this book is mostly more detailed than in the monographs of the Commission F, as a rule this has been omitted here. 

The guideline on chiral active substances states that particular attention should be paid to identity and stereochemical purity. It states that specifications for a racemate should include a test to show that the substance is indeed a racemate and this is a position supported by the requirements of the European Pharmacopoeia for drug substance monographs [16]. 

The general aim of this author in this monograph has been to determine the extent to which the effects produced by drugs on cells can be interpreted as processes following known laws of physical chemistry.

In medicine the need for standards was just as acute. Beal (r95i) mentioned that the U.S. Pharmacopoeia VI, issued in 1880, took a big step forward by adding tests for purity and quality of the materials described in it, but the use of reference materials as an integral part of the pharmaceutical monographs for drugs did not start until the 1950 s. The Pharmacopoeial Forum fulfills a vital role in promoting industry-wide communication between those involved with quality assurance, the development of standards and analytical methods. It contains an up to date list of official USP Reference Substances, with current and recently changed lot numbers. Reference Substances not yet available and those under development are also described. The publication acts as an international open forum in which scientists are invited to express their views, suggestions, ideas and comments regarding new drug standard development and revisions to existing monographs. Pharmacopoeial Forum is published, on a subscription basis, six times a year, back issues are available for USP website see Table 84.

NIDA Research Monographs are prepared by the research divisions of the National Institute on Drug Abuse and published by its Office of Science The primary objective of the series is to provide critical reviews of research problem areas and techniques, the content of state-of-the-art conferences, and integrative research reviews, its dual publication emphasis is rapid and targeted dissemination to the scientific and professional community. 

This monograph is based upon papers and discussion from the technical review on phencyclidine which took place on May 7-9, 1985, at Rockville, Maryland. The review was sponsored by the Divisions of Preclinical Research, Clinical Research, and Epidemiology and Statistical Analysis of the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
