Although the information is important, especially for the manufacturer of phytophar-maceuticals, it should also interest the pharmacist and doctor which indications, contraindications, side effects, interactions, dosages, manner of use, and effects are, as it were, officially recognized in some cases, where the evidence is insufficient, the Commission E came to the conclusion not to advocate therapeutic use - this, of course, in no way prohibits their use, but the pharmacist in his discussions with his clients will be hesitant in recommending or will inform them of the fact. The guideline on chiral active substances states that particular attention should be paid to identity and stereochemical purity. It states that specifications for a racemate should include a test to show that the substance is indeed a racemate and this is a position supported by the requirements of the European Pharmacopoeia for drug substance monographs [16]. [Pg.324]

In medicine the need for standards was just as acute. The Pharmacopoeial Forum fulfills a vital role in promoting industry-wide communication between those involved with quality assurance, the development of standards and analytical methods. It contains an up to date list of official USP Reference Substances, with current and recently changed lot numbers. Reference Substances not yet available and those under development are also described. The publication acts as an international open forum in which scientists are invited to express their views, suggestions, ideas and comments regarding new drug standard development and revisions to existing monographs.
