After the polymer is formed, the filament is produced by extrusion. The nylon can be taken directly from the polymerization process while it is still molten. Alternatively, previously dried nylon chips can be heated and melted. The molten nylon is pressed through a spinneret, which is like a showerhead with 10—100 holes. (A spinneret with a single hole produces a monofilament. Nylon monofilaments are used for fishing line and sheer... [Pg.370]

The stretching of the dye for operation in extrusion mode is shown in Fig. 8.3. As shown in Fig 8.3(a), the dyed drop stretched in a nearly constant and helical trajectory down the extruder. Closer to the exit the drop continued to be stretched as indicated by the smaller cross section of the tinted fluid filament, as shown in Fig. 8.3(b). The typical mixing in this mode of operation results in a dye monofilament that remains contiguous. Although not shown here, the trajectory and stretching depends on the starting position of the dye drop. [Pg.339]

Monofilament polypropylene fibres were prepared by direct extrusion having a rectangular cross section of 0.5 x 1.3 mm, a length of 40 mm, a specific gravity of 0.91, a tensile strength of 120 MPa, and an elongation at break of 14%. The fibers were placed under 18% humidity at ambient temperature air and then treated with 20% F2 and 80% N2 at apressure of 45 kPa at 38°C for 2.5 hours. Thereafter the reaction vessel was evacuated, and the product was isolated. [Pg.97]

Available forms Extrusion and molding powder, aqueous dispersion, film, monofilament fiber, and nonsticking finish. [Pg.572]

Teflon [Du Pont], TM for tetrafluoroethyl-ene (TFE) fluorocarbon polymers available as molding and extrusion powders, aqueous dispersion, film, finishes, and multifilament yam or fiber. The name also applies to fluorinated ethylene-propylene (FEP) resins available in the same forms. The no-stick cookware finishes may be of either type. Fibers are monofilaments made from copolymer of TFE and FEP. [Pg.1209]

All the common extrusion techniques can be used to process PVDF into various products, such as rod, sheet, film, pipe, tubing, monofilament, wire insulation, etc.f No extrusion additives, lubricants, or heat stabilizers are needed. Equipment with materials of construction similar to those used for extruding PVC and polyolefins is applicable for PVDF. Extrusion temperatures vary from 210°C to 270°C depending on the type of PVDF resin and the shape being extruded. Extruders with L/D ratios of at least 20 are recommended. For very thin products, the temperature at the dietip can be as high as 320° C as required for heat polishing. [Pg.2387]

Water quenching can be used for wire insulation, tubing, and pipe. Sheet and film extruded from slit dies are frequently crystallized on polished steel rolls operating at 65°C-145°C. Extruded, blown, or flat film can be uniaxially or biaxially oriented to submil thickness. Monofilament is extrusion spun into a water bath, and then oriented and heat set at an elevated temperature. [Pg.2387]

The incorporation of P-1 into monofilament by compounding with PPH powder and extrusion was effective only partially in reducing draw-initiated oxidation. After X3 cold draw (at 25°C) the observed -OOH level was 0.3 X 10 3M, in the presence of 0.1 wt % P-1, in comparison with 1.1 X 10 3M for the stabilizer-free fiber. Furthermore, this lower level of draw-induced degradation still had a large photosensitizing effect, even in the presence of the stabilizer. After 200 hr of UV exposure in the xenon arc, the P-1 concentration was reduced by more than 20 fold in the cold-drawn filament and photooxidation was accelerating rapidly, whereas for the undrawn filament no P-1 loss was visible, and photooxidation was undetectable. [Pg.70]

A range of products can be obtained using the Lupotech T process, including standard LDPE grades to EVA copolymers or n-butyl-acrylate modified copolymer. The products can be applied in (shrink) film extrusion, injection molding, extrusion blow molding, pipe extrusion, pipe coating, tapes and monofilaments. [Pg.223]

Filament, mono- Also called monofill. A monofilament is a single filament of relatively indefinite length. They are generally produced by extrusion. [Pg.96]
