The strategic objective of REBECCA has been to provide relevant scientific support for the implementation of the Water Eramework Directive (WED). The two specific aims of the project have been, first, to establish links between the ecological status of surface waters and physico-chemical quality elements and pressures from different sources, and, second, to develop and validate tools that Member States can use in the process of classification, in the design of their monitoring programmes, and in the design of measures in accordance with the requirements of the WED. 

As well as short-term, i.e. year-by-year plans, a successful company needs to have strategic plans covering, say, the next five years. There is also a supplementary requirement in clause 4.1.3.2 for the management review to include the monitoring of strategic quality objectives and the regular reporting and evaluation of the cost of poor quality. 

You need to initiate and plan, relate your objectives to wider corporate goals, which means thinking strategically, enlist the co-operation and support of others, handle the organization politics, monitor progress and take any corrective action, and finally to assess the outcome and determine where you should go from there. 

A key business strategy has been the outsourcing of work to computer technology suppliers and developers. The objective of qualifying computer technology suppliers and developers is to evaluate and monitor these strategic partners for Part 11 compliance and to provide an input to the partner selection and partner relationship management processes.

To illustrate divisional structure, ICI is headed by the Chief Executive who has four Executive Directors with overall strategic responsibility for operations, finance, personnel and planning. Each of the five businesses in ICI is headed by a chief executive (CE) who is accountable for its profits. The five CEs meet regularly with Id s Chief Executive and his four Executive Directors to monitor performance and consider policies and objectives of the group.
