Molding parameters

In the case of cortical cluster organization, selective elimination of collaterals, and not cell death, is the essential molding parameter. 

These plastics represent at least 90wt% of all plastics consumed worldwide. Unlike thermoset plastics, they are in many cases reproccssable without any or serious losses of properties. There are those than can have limitations of heat-distortion temperatures, cold flow and creep, and are more likely to be damaged by chemical solvent attack from paints, adhesives, and cleaners. When injection molded, dimensional integrity and ultimate strength are more dependent on the proper process control molding parameters than is generally the case with TSs. 

No microstructural differences between the mid and the core layers could be detected from comparison of the fracture surfaces (Figure 7c, d and 8c, d). The microstructures in these layers were better described as strips, and the average molecular orientations of the mid and the core layers were still parallel to the flow direction, in contrast with a relatively featureless core with little or no molecular orientation observed by other investigators Qj. The variations in the layered structures and the skin core phenomena observed in PECs could be correlated to the process history, the shapes of the specimens, the injection molding parameters, and the molecular structures of the polymers. 

A Plexus two-component reactive MMA adhesive system was able to resolve the problem for the OEM. The nature of the MMA adhesive means it is compatible with many types of thermoplastic regrind materials, and the adhesive does not need to be cut from the bonded part. Test data clearly showed that there were minimal effects on the injection molding parameters of the plastic and that there was minimal loss of properties when compared to the virgin material (see Figures 1 and 2).

While an optimized set of process conditions is desirable, it is also important that the set conditions are stable to small perturbations around the set point. This is achieved by automatically performing an experimental design. Prior to this, however, the module automatically determines shot to shot variability of the machine. With the variability known, design of experiment technology is used to define a space of molding parameters. For each set of conditions, a series of shots are determined and the operator is asked for feedback on part quality. Once the extremes of the space are determined, a set of conditions at the center of the space is selected as the most robust operating point.

Experimental design was used to evaluate the effects of both the tool design, as mentioned earlier, and the molding parameters on the quality of the parts. The measures of part quality include weight, dimensions,and runout, or out of roundness. In addition, the parts were checked using microfocus X-ray which is discussed in Task 3 section of this report. These measurements are being used to generate preliminary SPC information.

Since the formation of the nanotube network is strongly related to the flow of the melt, the electrical conductivity of injection molded parts can exhibit local variations [46]. Thus, next to the choice of the injection molding parameters, the electrical properties depend on the design parameters of the mold as gate position and shape, for instance. Such kind of investigations and the development of corresponding models are the topic of actual research activities. Some first results can be found in [67].
