The purpose o this work is to show that the values for temperatures o mold and storage bulb are important parameters in injection molding process o rubber. The study was performed by using two different thicknesses for rubber sheets and two values for the cure enthalpy. The problem was solved by applying an explicit numerical method with finite differences (6). Although rubber vulcanization consists of a complex series of reactions (8), the overall cure heat could be described by a first-order reaction with a single activation energy, as shown previously (6).

The injection molding process includes both molten polymer and solidification phase, where flow and crystallization may take place simultaneously. Therefore, for modeling injection molding, a rheological relation connecting the relative crystallinity a to flow parameters is needed. 

The estimated parameter values for the modified two-domain Tait model are shown in the inserts in Figure 14.7. This model is often used for numerical simulation of injection molding processes involving finite element analysis for predicting the shrinkage behavior of injection molded articles.

Tianjin P(3HB-4HB) and Tianan PHBV can be molded via injection molding. The temperature profile in the injection molding barrel is different than conventional thermoplastics with the hottest temperature at the first zone and the coolest temperature at the nozzle. PHAs can be exposed to a temperature range between 160°C and 190°C. PHAs viscosity is too large for injection molding at temperatures below 160°C. PHAs can thermally decompose at temperatures above 190 C. PHAs also require a heated mold to enhance crystallinity. The injection molding parameters for P(3HB-4HB) are displayed in Table 4.4. Injection molding process conditions are similar for PHBV.

The molding parameters have a great influence on part quality after the thermo-mechanical properties of mold material [45]. An unsuitable process parameter setting can cause many product defects (e.g., a long lead time, a large amount of scrap material, etc.) and unstable product quality during the injection molding process.
