These were performed by Phillips Petroleum and G.E. in 1964 and 1967. The lattices have nonmoderator-to-moderator ratios of 1.9 and 2.3, and H/U ratios of 2.7 and 2.3, respectively. When used in THF at room temperature, the base prepared from LiTMP and CoBr in a 3 1 ratio proves capable of deprotometalating different methoxybenzenes. The generated aryhnetal species can be trapped by different electrophiles iodine, anisaldehyde, and chlorodiphenylphosphine to respectively generate the corresponding iodide, alcohol, and phosphine in high yields and benzo-phenone, benzoyl chloride, and allyl bromide to afford the expected alcohol, ketone, and allylated compound in moderate yields (Table 27.10). The side formation of symmetrical dimers was observed in the course of these reactions, in particular using aUyl bromide such a side reaction (reduced by using the base in excess) could be initiated by one-electron transfer from a cobaltate species to the electrophile. Pyrethroids show very marked selective toxicity (Table 12.2). The use of stoichiometric ruthenium-NHC complexes generated in situ from [Ruljd-COCKp-cymene)], an imidazohnm salt [4] or an imidizol(idin)ium-2-carboxylate [4] has been applied in the cyclopropanation of styrene 5 with ethyl diazoacetate (EDA) 6 (Scheme 5.2). No base was necessary when imidazolium-2 carboxylate were employed. The diastereoselectivity was low and the cis/trans ratio was around 50/50 (Table 5.1).
