Upside Down Mixing

The mixing of acrylate elastomer compounds was investigated with the aim of reducing mixing time. Compounds were mixed upside down or right side up at low rpm or high rpm in a Farrell BR1600 (1.6 litres) Internal Mixer. The Mooney viscosity and tan delta were used to determine the processability of the compounds. 

Collect a 350-ml mud sample from the flowline and place the sample in the glass Jar. Allow the sample to cool to room temperature before the test is conducted. Mix at 70 V with the mixer for 1 hr. Pour the mud out, add 100 ml diesel oil, and shake well. (Do not stir with mixer.) Pour the oil out, add 50 ml xylene-isopropyl alcohol (1 1) mixture, and shake well. Empty jar, turn upside down, and allow to dry. Observe the film on the wall of the jar and report the evaluation as... 

Procedure. The water sample should be collected by carefully filling a 200-250 mL bottle to the very top and stoppering it while it is below the water surface. This should eliminate any further dissolution of atmospheric oxygen. By using a dropping pipette placed below the surface of the water sample, add 1 mL of a 50 per cent manganese(II) solution (Note 1) and in a similar way add 1 mL of alkaline iodide-azide solution (Note 2). Re-stopper the water sample and shake the mixture well. The manganese(III) hydroxide forms as a brown precipitate. Allow the precipitate to settle completely for 15 minutes and add 2 mL of concentrated phosphoric(V) acid (85 per cent). Replace the stopper and turn the bottle upside-down two or three times in order to mix the contents. The brown precipitate will dissolve and release iodine in the solution (Note 3). 

The electrolyte is filled in through either of the holes. There is no continuos water replacement mechanism. To equalise the electrolyte levels in each cell, the electrolyser needs to be turned upside down. It s crucially important that there are no holes in plates that are in contact with the electrolyte. Transfer filtrate to a separatory funnel, add 2 vol chloroform, and gently mix by turning funnel upside down a few times. Store sample overnight at 4°C or until a clear partition between the two phases is obtained. 

Add 25 mL of methanol, cap the bottle, and shake vigorously on the shaker for 30 min. After the contents have settled, decant 10 mL of the coagulant serum into a 1-oz bottle, add 10 mL of water, and stopper with a serum cap. Shake vigorously for 1 min, then turn the bottle upside down, and allow the layers to separate. Withdraw by syringe 1 to 2 mL of the lower (carbon disulfide) layer, and transfer it into a 10-dram vial filled with 1/4 in. of anhydrous sodium sulfate. Seal with a polyethylene cap, shake to mix, and allow to settle. 

Inhaling aerosol propellants is a bit mure complicated than inhaling solvents because the propellants come mixed with other substances. There are three basic procedures for mixing rubber compounds in an internal mixer namely, the conventional method, the rapid oil addition method, and the upside-down mix method. Many variations of these three methods are also used to suit the special characteristics of individual formulations and equipment. It is, in general, necessary to add particulate fillers early in the mixing cycle, so that good dispersion is achieved as a result of the high shear stress and high viscosity at the lower temperatures then prevailing. Similarly, the oils and plasticizers which reduce viscosity should be added later. Upside-down procedures and variants of it are attempts to implement these ideas in practice.
