It s possible the style of song chosen for You Only Live Twice (1967) was influenced on some level by the success of The Look of Love, from the Bond spoof released ordy two months before You Only Live Twice. Rather than another Shirley Bassey type room-filler, we got the same large orchestration backing a softer ballad.

First of all, Bond himself is ethnically mixed, as he tells a genealogist that [his] father was a Scot and [his] mother was Swiss Majesty s 57). This self-account is confirmed by the red-herring obituary that runs at the end of You Only Live Twice Twice 200). At the start of the series,... 

This fear of color and racial contamination and elision is taken to its extreme in You Only Live Twice, where Bond literally changes his skin color and goes undercover as a Japanese man (Twice 84-85). Once he has vanquished Blofeld, however, a lurking fear of contamination, of (in the words of the later song) Turning Japanese, is realized Bond suffers amnesia, and his lover Kissy Suzuki reinforces his Japanese identity (ibid 205-213), effectively switching his race for several months. 

Aficionados agree that the Bond films of the 60s represented the Classic period of 007 onscreen. Even though Sean Connery announced his retirement from the role of 007 after the blockbusters Thunderhall (1965) and You Only Live Twice (1967), there was to be one more entry in the series that fell within this Classic period. 

So let s examine what I see as deep subtext in three classic James Bond films You Only Live Twice, From Russia with Love, and the prototypical Bond film, Coldfinger. Warning What follows may forever change the way you look at these three films. Like Indy, you don t have to believe in all this hocus-pocus for it to be real. I m going to open the Ark, and it s up to you whether you close your eyes or have a look inside. 

You Only Live Twice James Bond Goes to Hell... 

You Only Live Twice starts in very familiar territory with 007 in bed with a beautiful woman. The end of most Bond movies is the beginning of this one. Except his companion is Asian, a fact unusual enough for Bond to comment on it Why do Chinese girls taste different from all other girls His instincts that there may be something off-taste about bis latest conquest prove correct when she turns out to be his very own Angel of Death. 

After a briefing— where, notably, M and the rest of the SIS staff are dressed in white uniforms while Bond is in black—007 is ejected from the sub s torpedo tube. (007 as sperm Sure, why not ) Bond then surfaces into a world that s entirely unfamiliar to him, a world in which he is constantly trapped and fooled, usually by women. In this strange upside-down world, Bond is called Zero Zero instead of 007, and even his martini order is mysteriously reversed, stirred, not shaken. Oddly enough. Bond confirms the mix as perfect. Bond admits to Tiger Tanaka that he s never been to Japan, which is odd for a man as worldly as James Bond— and didn t he mention an affair with Ann in Tokyo in From Russia with Love Also revealing is the fact that You Only Live Twice is the only single location Bond film. There s no globetrotting here. James Bond is stuck.
