Mixing process control

Cell recycle fermentors consist of two main units a vessel where the biomass is allowed to grow, and a membrane separation unit (as in Figure 7.40). Vessels are usually designed to insure a uniform concentration of nutrients and pH throughout the whole volume. Due to complete mixing, process control and stability of the microbial slurry are not difficult to achieve.88 After anaerobic stabilization, when the biomass is well developed, the reactor biomass is pumped to the UF unit where solid-liquid separation occurs. The sludge is flushed back to the reactor. In most cases, the flow rate of nutrient feed is kept equal to the permeate flow rate thus keeping a constant liquid level in the anaerobic reactor. [Pg.468]

Hot and cold liquids are mixed at the junction of two pipes. The temperature of the resulting mixture is to be controlled using a control valve on the hot stream. The dynamics of the mixing process, control valve, and temperature sensor/transmitter are negligible and the sensor-transmitter gain is 6 mA/mA. Because the temperature sensor is located well downstream of the junction, an 8 s time delay occurs. There are no heat losses/gains for the downstream pipe. [Pg.272]

With the proper ratio of nutrients and oxygen feed, a water-soluble polymer is produced and accompanied by growth in the microorganism population. The use of computer systems to control the operation of submerged arc furnaces, including calcium carbide, has been successfully demonstrated in the United States (see Expert systems Process control). Operations direcdy under control are mix batching, electrode position and sHp control, carbide gas yield, power control, and cooling water systems. An alternative process for opening bastnasite is used ia Chiaa high temperature roastiag with sulfuric acid followed by an aqueous leach produces a solution containing the Ln elements. Ln is then precipitated by addition of sodium chloride as a mixed sulfate. Controlled precipitation of hydroxide can remove impurities and the Ln content is eventually taken up ia HCl. The heat transfer Q, between the hot mainstream (g) and the cooling air (c) inside the blades, takes place from control surface A to control surface B, i.e. from the mainstream (between combustion outlet state 3g and state Xg), to the coolant (between compressor outlet state 2c and state Xc). The injection and mixing processes occur within control surface C (between states Xg and Xc and a common fully mixed state 5m, the rotor inlet state). The flows through A plus B and C are adiabatic in the sense that no heat is lost to the environment outside these control surfaces thus the entire process (A + B + C) is adiabatic. One extremely important point to realize is that different propellant types may have different rate-controlling processes. For example, the true double-base propellants are mixed on a molecular scale, since both fuel and oxidizing species occur on the same molecule. The mixing of ingredients and their decomposition products has already occurred and can therefore be neglected in any analysis. On the other hand, composite and composite modified-double-base propellants are not mixed to this degree, and hence mixing processes may be important in the analysis of their combustion behavior. [Pg.31]
