Rectangular mixer

The General Mills mixer—settler (117), shown in Figure 13b, is a pump—mix unit designed for hydrometaHurgical extraction. It has a baffled cylindrical mixer fitted in the base and a turbine that mixes and pumps the incoming Hquids. The dispersion leaves from the top of the mixer and flows into a shallow rectangular settler designed for minimum holdup. 

In the Davy-Powergas unit (118—120), shown in Figure 13c, the Hquids mn through a draft tube and are pumped by an impeller mnning directly above the draft tube. The dispersion flows out from the top of the mixer and down through a channel into a rectangular settler. Large units of this type are used for copper extraction (7).

Duct flows can be converted into efficient mixing flows (i.e., flows with an exponential stretch of material lines with time) by time- modulation or by spatial changes along the duct axis. One example of the spatially periodic class is the partitioned-pipe mixer (PPM). This flow consists of a pipe partitioned with a sequence of orthogonally placed rectangular plates (Fig. 5a). The cross-sectional motion is induced through rotation of the pipe with respect to the assembly of plates, whereas the axial flow is caused by...

Internal batch mixers can sometimes be simplified to a system such as the one shown in Fig. 6.77. For h R, the system can be further simplified by unwrapping the material from the cylinder and modeling it using rectangular coordinates.

The rectangular mixer is composed of four plates (see Figure 1.78) [20, 39, 124], The second plate contains the complete interdigital feed for one fluid (reservoir + multi-channel feed), the multi-channel feed of the other fluid (without reservoir), the focusing section and the mixing channel. The third plate comprises two rows of multiple holes serving as conduits to the underlying fluid reservoir. Fluid distribution is achieved via these holes. A first plate serves as cover.

The construction and microfabrication are identical with those of the rectangular micro mixer [M 36] (see above) [20, 37, 124],...

The second major difference of the flow patterns of the triangular to the rectangular mixers that more complex concentration profiles are found which have more peaks than the number of generated lamellae [20], This becomes evident at volume flows > 200 ml h-1. 

M 36] [P 39] Hydrodynamic focusing was achieved in a rectangular interdigital mixer by setting the two flow rates of the liquids at different levels [20], In this way, one set of lamellae can be thinned considerably. The corresponding flow pattern are described as a function fo the ratio of the individual flow rates of the two liquids. 

M 43] [M 36] [P 41] The liquid mixing time was calculated to be 59 ms for a standard triangular mixer creating lamellae about 110 pm thick (see Table 1.6) [39], For comparison, the liquid mixing time of the rectangular mixer having 100 pm thin lamellae is 2.48 s. 

A modular micro structured chemical reaction system (ICS) similar to [R 14] is claimed by Bard [84]. The system can use various replaceable and interchangeable cylindrical or rectangular reactors. Generally, the ICS system can include fluid flow handling and control components, mixers, reaction chip-type units, separator devices, process variable detectors and controllers and a computer interface for communicating with the master control center (see Figure 4.31) [84],...
