In a different type of RUPS system, during loss of normal power the AC motor is supplied from a battery bank by means of an inverter (Figure 2.19). The batteries are kept charged by the normal power source. The motor is powered from the batteries until the batteries become depleted. In some applications, standby generators are used to supply the battery bank in case of loss of normal power. Other combinations are used to provide uninterrupted power to critical loads, but we will not attempt to review all the available technologies. It is sufficient to point out that low-frequency disturbances are effectively mitigated using one of the means mentioned in this section. 

Previous studies have shown that foam can be effectively used to mitigate oil bypassing. Foam can be injected into a reservoir, or, preferably, it can be generated in situ. The in situ generation is accomplished by injecting a bank of surfactant solution followed by the injection of the gas. The latter method avoids increased injection pressure that would result from the foam s low mobility in or near the injection well.

The explosion of combustible gas is a very severe problem to keep the reactor safety. The problem can be considered as overpressure caused by blast to the safety-related components. There are three principal countermeasures against explosion, that is, i) place a distance between the reactor and the hydrogen production system enough to mitigate the overpressure within an allowable range, ii) limit the leak amount of combustible gas, and iii) protect blast with barriers such as wall, bank and so on. As for the hydrogen production system connected to HTTR, the countcnncasure-ii) was mainly considered.

The first and second banks of secondary safety valves open at approximately 5.6 and 7.7 seconds. The third band of safety valves is not actuated.
