Mitigation banking

Being a wholly physical process, mitigation measures for this impact are also primarily physical, although it should be noted that the benefits of restoring flows in watercourses that were previously depleted can have important water quality implications, such as provision of useful dilution for sewage and other forms of pollution (e.g., Banks et al. 1996). [Pg.194]

In a different type of RUPS system, during loss of normal power the AC motor is supplied from a battery bank by means of an inverter (Figure 2.19). The batteries are kept charged by the normal power source. The motor is powered from the batteries until the batteries become depleted. In some applications, standby generators are used to supply the battery bank in case of loss of normal power. Other combinations are used to provide uninterrupted power to critical loads, but we will not attempt to review all the available technologies. It is sufficient to point out that low-frequency disturbances are effectively mitigated using one of the means mentioned in this section. [Pg.50]

Previous studies have shown that foam can be effectively used to mitigate oil bypassing. Foam can be injected into a reservoir, or, preferably, it can be generated in situ. The in situ generation is accomplished by injecting a bank of surfactant solution followed by the injection of the gas. The latter method avoids increased injection pressure that would result from the foam s low mobility in or near the injection well. [Pg.388]

Most independent power projects which compete in these markets are financed off-balance sheet ie they rely on debt provided by banks and similar fmancial institutions to provide 70-85 per cent of the project s funding. The banks will require all risks associated with the project to be identified and mitigated or accepted by others they will have a thorough appraisal of the project s technical and commercial aspects conducted by indqjendent engineers and lawyers with all due diligence . [Pg.998]

The explosion of combustible gas is a very severe problem to keep the reactor safety. The problem can be considered as overpressure caused by blast to the safety-related components. There are three principal countermeasures against explosion, that is, i) place a distance between the reactor and the hydrogen production system enough to mitigate the overpressure within an allowable range, ii) limit the leak amount of combustible gas, and iii) protect blast with barriers such as wall, bank and so on. As for the hydrogen production system connected to HTTR, the countcnncasure-ii) was mainly considered. [Pg.179]

Coal refuse banks are cleaned prior to use in order to remove the carbonaceous material. In addition, modern coal refuse disposal practices mitigate this problem by placing the refuse in thin, well-compacted layers and covering all exposed surfaces with several feet of earth fill in order to reduce or eliminate the presence of oxygen needed to initiate or support combustion... [Pg.124]

The first and second banks of secondary safety valves open at approximately 5.6 and 7.7 seconds. The third band of safety valves is not actuated. The secondary safety valves remove energy from the RCS and thus mitigate the pressure excursion. The primary safety valves are conservatively assumed to open at 1 percent above the normal RCS design pressure. This occurs 5.05 seconds after the initiation of the event. [Pg.226]

The Istanbul Seismic Risk Mitigation and Emergency Preparedness Project (ISMEP) (with loans from World Bank and ElB) allowed for retrofitting of 250 schools and reconstruction of 36 schools in 2007-2008 with 600 more undergoing assessment and feasibility studies. In 2009 the remaining 450 schools were slated for retrofitting. [Pg.2464]
