An increasing demand is expected for the removal of nitrogen oxides from waste gases from stationary and instationary diesel engines for e.g. emergency plants, ships and trucks. Under these circumstances, new needs have arisen for improved technological approaches to meet the diversified requirements of communities, each with its own particular refuse disposal problems. Coal refuse banks are cleaned prior to use in order to remove the carbonaceous material. In addition, modern coal refuse disposal practices mitigate this problem by placing the refuse in thin, well-compacted layers and covering all exposed surfaces with several feet of earth fill in order to reduce or eliminate the presence of oxygen needed to initiate or support combustion...

Coal preparation is an industry that has a substantial impact on the environment, and refuse disposal forms a major part of this multi-faceted problem (Argonne, 1990). Run-of-mine coal from underground mines goes directly to the coal washing section or preparation plants where beneficiation and removal of certain impurities associated with coal substance take place. 

Although there is a social desire to recycle, the current price of landfill space in some areas has not yet offset the cost of curbside collecdon of recyclables. Recycling in Illinois is generally paid for on a per household basis. The cost of recycling may be expected to add 10-25% to the cost of existing refuse disposal. This translates into an additional cost of l- 2.50 per month per household, either paid by a municipality throu. general/taxpayer funds or directly included on homeowner bills. 

An alternative useful quarry site restoration method is to utilize the excavations for refuse disposal, so that they are filled in before final landscaping.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls. There are several sources of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in museums. Often these are first discovered by waste-disposal companies that pick up a museum s hazardous refuse. Disposal companies usually analyze solvent, paint, and other hydrocarbon wastes because disposal of PCB-contaminated material is vastly more complex and expensive than disposal of ordinary wastes. In some cases, museum waste has been contaminated by fluids leaking from transformers or fluorescent light ballasts, both of which are common sources of PCBs. However, on two occasions of which the present author is aware, the contamination was from Arochor slide-mounting medium (a material which contains PCBs and polychlorinated triphenyls) and/or PCB-contaminated pigments such as phthalocyanine blue and green, and diarylide (benzidine) yellow. 

Provide plants and systems for water supply and sewage and refuse disposal.
