Despite mission statements to the contrary, it often appears that the goal of the pharmaceutical industry is to protect its interests and exploit the incentives embedded in the framework that governs and supports it. It often develops in conjunction with other research establishments, manufactures, markets, and distributes drugs that may benefit most those suffering in the developed world - not necessarily those in developing countries. 

The following elements have been suggested in developing a mission statement for a community pharmacy the intended (or target) customers, the core values of the pharmacy (such as compassion, respect, and confidentiality), the key services and products provided by the pharmacy, the benefits incurred by customers (such as improved health and improved safety), and the desired public image of the pharmacy (Hagel, 2002). 

As with other types of planning, the initial step of business planning is to define the business or service proposed. After exploring the business concept (see above), Ted likely already will have developed a clear idea of the business proposal. To formalize a definition of the business, he should develop a specific statement of the purpose of the program. This statement is also called a mission statement and was discussed in Chapter 3. Career advancement opportunities should be made available within clinical practice and not be confined to a managerial track. Career ladders should be constructed to institutionalize and formalize department expectations for the development of clinical practice skills. 

Knowing these shortcomings, the contents were grouped in sections on industrial mission statements, laboratory process development, pilots and chemical production. For the process development part of this chapter, papers were also considered with industrial coauthors, assuming that the work was (partly) done under industrial perspective and reflects fields of interest and activity of industry. 

Now the phases of the method. In the initial phase - often called Product Planning - a small group of people collects ideas that might be worth developing.
