Miscellaneous Olefinic Copolymers

Sequencing studies have also been conducted on the following olefin copolymers ethylene terephthalate [69-72], ethylene-a-olefin [73], ethylene-a-methylstyrene [74], ethylene-decene-1 [75], ethylene-butene [33], ethylene-propylene diene [76], miscellaneous ethylene copolymers [49] and ethylene-acrylonitrile [77].

Miscellaneous Copolymers. VP has been employed as a termonomer with various acryUc monomer—monomer combinations, especially to afford resins usehil as hair fixatives. Because of major differences in reactivity, VP can be copolymerized with alpha-olefins, but the products are actually PVP grafted with olefin or olefin oligomers (151,152). Likewise styrene can be polymerized in the presence of PVP and the resulting dispersion is unusually stable, suggesting that this added resistance to separation is caused by some grafting of styrene onto PVP (153). The Hterature contains innumerable references to other copolymers but at present (ca 1997), those reviewed in this article are the only ones known to have commercial significance. 

Copolymer formation by miscellaneous reactions Hourston et al. [1991] have prepared compositions of 60-0 parts PBT and 16-40 parts EPDM in the presence of 0-60 parts copolymer of PBT with maleate ester (3.5% maleate) using a TSE at 255°C. A compatibilizing copolymer resulted from the crosslinking reaction between maleate olefinic groups and EPDM olefinic groups. Blends were characterized by mechanical properties and TEM. Model studies were performed to understand the crosslinking process. Blends were also prepared using an internal mixer at 250°C. 

This volume continues in the same format as the first edition with updates on the syntheses of various types of polymers, including olefin-sulfur dioxide copolymers, polythioesters, sulfide polymers, polyisocyanates, polyoxyalkyihydroxy compounds, polyvinyl carbazole, polyvinyl acetate, polyallyl esters, polyvinyl fluoride, and miscellaneous polymer preparations. The book should be useful to academic and industrial chemists who desire typical synthetic procedures for preparing the polymers described herein. In addition to reviewing the latest journals, we survey the patent literature and give numerous additional references.
