Miscarriages

Disinfection - water completely free of suspended sediment, is treated with a powerful oxidizing agent usually chlorine, chlorine and ammonia (chloramine), or ozone. A residual disinfectant is left in the water to prevent reinfection. Chlorine can form harmful byproducts and has suspected links to stomach cancer and miscarriages. [Pg.241]

Abgang, m. waste loss decrease, decline going off, leaving escape (of gases, etc.) miscarriage sale, market. — Abgange, pi. Metal.) tailings. [Pg.4]

A much more serious nuclear accident occurred at Chernobyl in the USSR on April 26, 1986, when one of the Chernobyl units experienced a full-core meltdown. The Chernobyl accident has been called the worse disaster of the industrial age. An area comprising more than 60,000 square miles in the Ukraine and Belarus was contaminated, and more than 160,000 people were evacuated. However, wind and water have spread the contamination, and many radiation-related illnesses, birth defects, and miscarriages have been attributed to the Chernobyl disaster. [Pg.481]

Develop a nursing care plan for Ms. Morris, a 28-year-old, woman who is admitted to the obstetric unit with premature labor during her third trimester. This is her second child, and die has had two miscarriages. She is prescribed ritodrine for preterm labor. Analyze what nursing diagnoses would have the highest priority. Discuss how you would explore and plan to meet her emotional needs. [Pg.566]

Mutagen—A substance that causes mutations. A mutation is a change in the DNA sequence of a cell s DNA. Mutations can lead to birth defects, miscarriages, or cancer. [Pg.244]

A drug prescribed in the 1950s to prevent miscarriages was reported to cause cancer and other problems in female children of the drug recipients. [Pg.154]

Increases in miscarriages have been reported among nurses exposed to rmspecified concentrations of trichloroethylene and other chemicals in operating rooms (Corbett et al. 1974). The occurrence of miscarriages could not conclusively be attributed to trichloroethylene because there was concomitant exposure to other chemicals. [Pg.55]

Reproductive Effects. Operating room nurses exposed to trichloroethylene have been reported to have an increased incidence of miscarriages, but they were exposed to many other anesthetics as well (Corbett et al. 1974). Survey results of 1,926 women who had spontaneous abortions revealed a greater risk of abortion associated with trichloroethylene exposure (Windham et al. 1991). This study is limited by multiple chemical exposure. Humans exposed to trichloroethylene in the drinking water in certain areas of the country have not shown adverse reproductive effects (Byers et al. 1988 Freni and Bloomer 1988 Lagakos et al. 1986a). [Pg.153]

Reproductive Toxicity. Increased miscarriages were reported in one study of nurse-anesthetists exposed to trichloroethylene and other solvents (Corbett et al. 1974). A retrospective case-control study has should an approximate 3-fold increase in spontaneous abortion in women exposed to trichloroethylene and other solvents (Windham et al. 1991). Significant effects on sperm parameters were not observed in men occupationally exposed to trichloroethylene (Rasmussen et al. 1988). Adverse reproductive effects were not noted in humans that ingested water contaminated with trichloroethylene and other solvents (Byers et al. [Pg.185]

Beliles et al. 1980 Land et al. 1981). Studies for oral exposure indicate no adverse reproductive effects (NTP 1985, 1986). More research on the reproductive effects of inhalation exposure to trichloroethylene, especially effects on miscarriage in humans is needed. Additional animal studies via the inhalation and dermal routes are needed to further characterize reproductive effects. [Pg.186]

Intrauterine pregnancy, ectopic pregnancy, and miscarriage must be at the top of the differential diagnosis list for any woman presenting with heavy menses. [Pg.751]

Whereas (32 glycoprotein 1 ((J2-GPI) is the target of anticardiolipin antibodies, prothrombin is the antigen for most lupus anticoagulants. Both these antibodies are risk factors for both venous and arterial thrombosis. In addition, complications such as thrombocytopenia and recurrent miscarriages are manifestations of the so-called antiphospholipid syndrome (97). [Pg.156]

Most displayed decreased blood cholinesterase activity. Many were observed to have affective syndromes (anxiety, fear, aggression), sometimes accompanied by symptoms of depression. Disruption of memory was noted. Vision problems are also caused by long-term contact with OPPs [A64]. In cotton growing regions with intensive OPP use, the number of spontaneous miscarriages and stillbirths was higher than elsewhere [3]. [Pg.49]
