Minimum Protective Clothing

According to NPA Chemical Repository suggestions for di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate. Minimum Protective Clothing is Tyvek-type disposable protective clothing or disposable Tyvek-type sleeves taped to gloves. Reqirirements for other plasticizers will be similar. 

The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) has introduced a number of test methods relating to protective clothing. For example, the ASTM F23 Committee on Protective Clothing has devised protocols for measuring chemical resistance of materials. There are not however, any comprehensive standards which list a minimum number of tests or chemicals to evaluate materials. 

Fire hazards are minimized by minimum inventories of chemicals. Control or miniini/e ignition sources, provide a confining area, reduce the temperature of the material as much iis possible, blanket the material to eliminate air contact. Have available fire protection equipment breathing apparatus, and protective clothing for the fire fighters. Use several hour fire walls to prevent the spread of fire to other process areas. 

In this part of the study, the internal dose of propoxur was assessed for HV applicators (n = 9) and harvesters (n = 18) using biological monitoring in two trials. In the first trial, workers wore their normal work clothing, followed by a trial where the same workers wore additional protective clothing. The minimum period between the two trials was 5 days. 

Spill/Leak Disposal If leaks or spills of Sarin occur, only personnel in full protective clothing will remain in the area. Spills must be contained by covering with vermiculite, diatomaceous earth, clay, fine sand, sponges, and paper or cloth towels. Decontaminate with copious amounts of aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (a minimum of 10 wt.%). Scoop up all material and place it in a DOT approved container. Cover the contents with decontamination solution as above. After sealing, the exterior will be decontaminated and labeled according to EPA and DOT regulations. All leaking containers will be over packed with sorbent (e.g., vermiculite) placed between the interior and exterior containers. 

Protective Clothing. Protective clothing for laboratory personnel is provided daily. As a minimum, it consists of a fully fastened, long laboratory coat. The protective clothing (laboratory coat, jumpsuit or pants/shirt, smock, and gown) is not to be worn outside of the work area. Figure 1. 

Methylene chloride, vinyl chloride, and toluene will be present in liquid form in the trench. All would also be expected to be present in the vapor state, with vinyl chloride being the most volatile due to its high Henry s law constant. The principal dangers to site remediation workers, therefore, would be from inhalation of vapors and skin absorption of contacted liquids. Pentachlorophenol and PCBs will be present in solid and semisolid forms. Minimal vapors of these compounds would be expected. The principal dangers would be from inhalation of dusts and fumes, ingestion of solids, and skin absorption due to solids contact. In the absence of engineering controls and work practices, the necessary worker PPE would include, at a minimum, respirators and chemical protective clothing. 

Always wear suitable protective clothing. A laboratory coat and safety glasses are a minimum protective gloves are also advisable.
