Portland cement mineralized

In the production of mineralized Portland cements small amounts of minor constituents are added to the raw meal to enhance the manufacturing process and/or the properties of the produced cement. [Pg.27]

Cement. Portland cement, a mixture of calcium siUcate and calcium aluminate minerals, is produduced by the calcination of argillaceous limestone or mixtures of limestone and clay (see Cement). Although other clays can be used, ka olin is preferred because of its alumina and siUca content and low level of impurities. It is especially desirable in the manufacture of white cement and other types requiring careful control of chemical composition. Air-floated ka olin, because of its low cost, is usually used. [Pg.210]

Although low in volume compared with other foundry solid waste, baghouse dust may still be used beneficially in the production of portland cement. This opportunity arises from its attractive mineral composition silica, clay, and metal fines, which are needed in the cement kiln. Also, special efforts may be undertaken to characterize its chemical composition and purity. [Pg.186]

One of the most significant uses of fly ash is as a mineral admixture in Portland cement concrete. This use alone accounted for over 56 wt% of the fly ash utilized in the USA in 2001 (American Coal Ash Association 2002). Fly ash is particularly well suited to this application because of its... [Pg.249]

Sulfur concretes are used in many specialty areas where Portland cement concretes are not completely satisfactory. Because SC can be formulated to resist deterioration and failure from mineral acid and salt solutions, it is used for construction of tanks, electrolytic cells, thickeners, industrial flooring, pipe, and others. In addition, SC is under investigation for many other prospective uses (58,59) (see CEMENT). [Pg.126]

Coupled with the shortages in asphalt and portland cement is the general problem of shortages in quality mineral aggregates. [Pg.236]

Sulfur Concretes (1 , IS). A range of different approaches are emerging to fabricate numerous products from a mixture of elemental or modified sulfur and mineral aggregates. These include cast-in-place as well as preformed or precast items which were previously made from Portland cement. [Pg.237]

Portland cement clinker potential phase composition is presented in Table 4. It could be seen that the C3A content in the clinker was 9.46% which is important for the cement hydration rate and cement sulfate resistance. Common Portland cement is not resistant to the sulfate influence because of the significant C3A content, whose hydrates react with sulfate ions resulting in expansive compounds. Portland cement with the higher resistance to sulfates must have low C3A content. Moderate to high content of mineral alite - C3S (54.72%) is usual for the Serbian cement plants and enables the addition of higher quantities of mineral admixtures without influencing the quality of final cement. [Pg.178]

Particulate composites are used in greater volume than any others because concrete is a particular composite. In many ways, concrete is the archetype of this class of composites. It consists of particles or aggregates of various sizes almost always of mineral materials, bonded together by a matrix of an inorganic cement originally mixed with and hardened by its chemical reaction to water. Many types of particles are employed, at least five different types of Portland cements and several other types of inorganic cements act as binders. [Pg.464]

The enthalpy change on formation of Portland cement clinker cannot be calculated with high precision, mainly because of uncertainties associated with the clay minerals in the raw material. Table 3.1 gives data for the main thermochemical components of the reaction, almost all of which have been calculated from a self-consistent set of standard enthalpies of formation, and which are therefore likely to be more reliable than other values in the literature. The conversion of the clay minerals into oxides is an imaginary reaction, but valid as a component in a Hess s law calculation. Few reliable thermochemical data exist for clay minerals those for pyrophyllite and kaolinite can probably be used with sufficient accuracy, on a weight basis. [Pg.63]
