Argillaceous limestone

Cementstone is an impure (usually argillaceous) limestone, possessing the ideal balance of siUca, alumina, and calcium carbonate for Portiand cement (qv) manufacture. When calcined it produces a hydrauHc cementing material. [Pg.163]

Cement. Portland cement, a mixture of calcium siUcate and calcium aluminate minerals, is produduced by the calcination of argillaceous limestone or mixtures of limestone and clay (see Cement). Although other clays can be used, ka olin is preferred because of its alumina and siUca content and low level of impurities. It is especially desirable in the manufacture of white cement and other types requiring careful control of chemical composition. Weaver (1959) noted that the chlorite, which is a common constituent of the Ordovician K-bentonite beds of the eastern United States, has a dioctahedral 2 1 layer and a trioctahedral hydroxide sheet. A partial chemical analysis indicated the chlorite contained less than 2% Fe203. Both layers were probably formed in place from the alteration of volcanic ash in a marine environment. Only one other chlorite of this type had been detected in X-ray patterns of approximately 75,000 samples of sedimentary rocks.
