Micromorphological Changes. Chemical analyses are gross analyses. Wood is a tissue, a complex of cells. Its integrity is dependent on tissue and cell integrity and thus cannot be understood by gross analyses alone. [Pg.12]

Atomic force microscopy and attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy were used to study the changes occurring in the micromorphology of a single strut of flexible polyurethane foam. A mathematical model of the deformation and orientation in the rubbery phase, but which takes account of the harder domains, is presented which may be successfully used to predict the shapes of the stress-strain curves for solid polyurethane elastomers with different hard phase contents. It may also be used for low density polyethylene at different temperatures. Yield and rubber crosslink density are given as explanations of departure from ideal elastic behaviour. 17 refs. [Pg.60]

Copeland et al. (C39,C25) treated CjS pastes, and C-S-H prepared in other ways, with various sources of AP, Fe or S04 ions. The XRD peaks of the phases providing the ions disappeared, and changes occurred in the micromorphology of the gels and in the non-evaporable water contents and fractions of the CaO extractable by an organic solvent. It was concluded that the ions were taken up by the C-S-H and that up to about one silicon atom in six could be replaced by aluminium, iron or sulphur, and that aluminium and iron could also replace calcium. These results suggested that the principal hydration product in Portland cement pastes was a substituted C-S-H, a conclusion that later appeared to be supported by the results of the... [Pg.213]

By varying the volume fraction of polymer, i.e. the apparent denaty, we may, in principle, change and even predetermine the type of macrocell packing and the content of microcells (see Fig. 2), that is to affect moisture and water absorption through macro- and micromorphological parameters of the foamed polymer. [Pg.36]

A promising technique to obtain good secondary materials from mixed plastic with modifier-free processes is to change the micromorphology of the blend. HDPE/PET blends where recycled in the presence of a stabilizer aiming to get... [Pg.1891]

These sets of parameters appear to be rather arbitrary and may have been established by empirical methods. It is the purpose of this chapter to describe some of the underlying solid state chemical principles which will allow us to systematize the complex phenomena of activation. A description of the resulting micromorphology will be followed by an analysis of the activated surfaces. The properties of the resulting gas-solid interface, as described by elemental and structural compositions and their changes with time, determine the usefulness of the activated catalyst. Finally, an empirical model of the active catalyst surface is presented which provides the basis for the discussion of the process of ammonia synthesis in terms of a comparison between the technical catalyst and model surfaces based on single crystals of iron. [Pg.20]

It is pointed out that the presence of water in concentrations larger than a few hundred ppm (outlet stream concentration) also changes the surface constitution and the micromorphology of the activated catalyst. The phenomenon has therefore been studied in detail and will be discussed in Section 2.7.1. [Pg.51]

Multi method analyses of polycyclic soil profiles provide the detailed knowledge which is necessary to fully understand time development of soil patterns in areas which are strongly affected by human land use. The combination of traditional soil survey techniques (soil classification, soil mapping), pollen analyses, micromorphology and soil dating techniques (14Q OSL) makes it possible to date major changes in geo-ecological evolution. [Pg.111]
