Micro derivatives

Moseman RF, Ward MK, Crist HL, et al. 1978. A micro derivation technique for the confirmation of trace quantities of Kepone. J Agric Food Chem 26(4) 965-968. [Pg.275]

Folic acid and its derivatives (mostly the tri-and heptaglutamyl peptides) are widespread in nature. It is a specific growth ctor for certain micro-organisms, but in animals the intestinal bacteria provide the small quantities needed for growth. The coenzyme forms are actually... [Pg.180]

The preparations of all the derivatives, and all the hydrolyses of esters, anilides, etc., described in Part III, provide excellent practice in semi-micro manipulation. [Pg.71]

First, considerably greater emphasis has been placed on semimicro techniques and their application to preparations, separations, analysis and physical determinations such as those of molecular weight. We have therefore greatly expanded the section on Manipulation on a semi-micro scale which was in the Third Edition, and we have described many more preparations on this scale, some independent and others as alternatives to the larger-scale preparations which immediately precede them. Some 40 separate preparations on the semi-micro scale are described in detail, in addition to specific directions for the preparation of many classes of crystalline derivatives required for identification purposes. The equipment required for these small-scale reactions has been selected on a realistic basis, and care has been taken not to include the very curious pieces of apparatus sometimes suggested as necessary for working on the semi-micro scale. [Pg.585]

Place 0 -5 g. of 3 4 5 triiodobenzoyl chloride in a small test-tube, add 0 -25 ml. of the alcohol - ether and heat the mixture gently over a micro burner until the evolution of hydrogen chloride ceases (3-5 minutes). Pour the molten mass into 10 ml. of 20 per cent, alcohol to which crushed ice has been added. Some derivatives solidify instantly those which separate as oils change to solids in a few minutes without further manipulation. Recrystallise from rectified spirit (use 50 per cent, alcohol for esters of methyl and butyl carbitol ). [Pg.265]

Quantitative estimation of cyclohexane in the presence of benzene and aUphatic hydrocarbons may be accompHshed by a nitration-dehydrogenation method described in Reference 61. The mixture is nitrated with mixed acid and under conditions that induce formation of the soluble mononitroaromatic derivative. The original mixture of hydrocarbons then is dehydrogenated over a platinum catalyst and is nitrated again. The mononitro compounds of the original benzene and the benzene formed by dehydrogenation of the cyclohexane dissolve in the mixed acid. The aUphatic compound remains unattacked and undissolved. This reaction may be carried out on a micro scale. [Pg.409]

Phi bium fixes only when the micro aetophilic conditions existing in the nodule ate simulated in a plant-free culture. Many other genera oxidize gases, such as H2 or methane, to derive the energy necessary for growth and fixation. [Pg.86]

A variation on depth profiling that can be performed by modern scanning Auger instruments (see Sect. 2.2.6) is to program the incident electron beam to jump from one pre-selected position on a surface to each of many others in turn, with multiplexing at each position. This is called multiple point analysis. Sets of elemental maps acquired after each sputtering step or each period of continuous sputtering can be related to each other in a computer frame-store system to derive a three-dimensional analysis of a selected micro volume. [Pg.42]

A variety of starting materials other than glucose or its derivatives is possible for use by some micro-organisms the four shown in Figure 5.1 are all initially converted to acetyl CoA for entry into the central metabolic pathways. [Pg.120]

Considerable interest arose during the 1970 s and 1980 s in the use of micro-organisms to produce useful fatty adds and related compounds from hydrocarbons derived from the petroleum industry. During this period, a large number of patents were granted in Europe, USA and Japan protecting processes leading to the production of alkanols, alkyl oxides, ketones, alkanoic adds, alkane dioic acids and surfactants from hydrocarbons. Many of these processes involved the use of bacteria and yeasts associated with hydrocarbon catabolism. [Pg.334]

For the most part of the experiments one can conclude that transition from laminar to turbulent flow in smooth and rough circular micro-tubes occurs at Reynolds numbers about RCcr = 2,000, corresponding to those in macro-channels. Note that other results were also reported. According to Yang et al. (2003) RCcr derived from the dependence of pressure drop on Reynolds number varied from RCcr = 1,200 to RCcr = 3,800. The lower value was obtained for the flow in a tube 4.01 mm in diameter, whereas the higher one was obtained for flow in a tube of 0.502mm diameter. These results look highly questionable since they contradict the data related to the flow in tubes of diameter d> mm. Actually, the 4.01 mm tube may be considered... [Pg.121]

The content of a curriculum must be functional when dealing with societal activities necessary chemical concepts, skills and attitudes with respect to macro-micro thinking must be included. This can be derived from representative authentic tasks. The content of the curriculum should be considered as a chemical toolbox. The traditional content of the present chemistry curriculum, such as the stmcture of atoms, ionic theoiy, fundamental acid-base calculations, are not necessarily part of the chemical toolbox when addressing chemical and technological tasks. The validity of the toolbox (philosophical substmcture) is determined by the representative practices and tasks related to chemistry (cf need-to-know principle in context-based approaches). [Pg.198]

To summarise in authentic tasks, we have established that stmcture-property relations can be described by a dynamic system of stmctures, properties and their interrelations. Within the limits of our study we have derived a generalised conceptual schema, which we expect to be useful to teach macro-micro problems in which stmcture-property relations can be explicitly used (Figs. 9.2, 9.3 and 9.4). The system of nested stmctures, systematically assigned to appropriate scales, and the properties of the different stmctural components reveal a conceptual schema necessary for macro-micro thinking. The system of relevant nested stmctures and the explicit relations between stmctures and properties form the backbone of macro-micro reasoning. Depending on the task, a number of different meso-levels are relevant and... [Pg.205]
