Metronidazole Flagyl, Metrogel) exerts activity against most anaerobic bacteria and several protozoa. The drug freely penetrates protozoal and bacterial cells but not mammalian cells. Metronidazole can function as an electron sink, and because it does so, its 5-nitro group is reduced. The enzyme, pyruvate-ferredoxin oxidoreduc-tase, found only in anaerobic organisms, reduces metronidazole and thereby activates the drug. Reduced metronidazole disrupts replication and transcription and inhibits DNA repair. [Pg.608]

Adverse local effects of the water-based gel formulation (MetroGel) include dryness, burning, and stinging. Less drying formulations may be better tolerated (MetroCream, MetroLotion, and Noritate cream). Caution should be exercised when applying metronidazole near the eyes to avoid excessive tearing. [Pg.1288]

In most instances patients demonstrate significant improvement of clinical symptomatology and physical signs in the first 2 to 3 weeks. Many patients, however, require chronic therapy and demonstrate exacerbations of the disease during its course. Metronidazole (MetroGel) is a topical gel developed to treat the skin of the facial area in patients with chronic disease and thus reduce the reliance on oral antimicrobial agents. It is applied twice daily. Although not yet an approved use, metronidazole gel applied to the eyelids was found to be an effective treatment of ocular rosacea. [Pg.464]
