Methyl alcohol salicylate

This alcohol, the lowest of the paraffin series, is found in the distillation waters of a number of essential oils, being soluble in all proportions in water. It does not therefore form a constituent of essential oils in the form in which they are found in commerce. In the form of esters, methyl alcohol is found as a constituent of a number of essential oils, such as, for example, oil of wintergreen, which consists almost entirely of methyl salicylate. Methyl alcohol, CH OH, is a liquid of specific gravity 0 810, boiling at 64°. 

The best method for producing it artificially is to condense salicylic acid and methyl alcohol by means of sulphuric acid. It is a colourless oil, optically inactive, and possessing an intense wintergreen odour. It has the following characters —...

SAM-dependent methylation of salicylic acid. The salicyl alcohol derivative salicin, found in many species of willow (Salix species Salicaceae), is not derived from salicylic acid, but probably via glucosylation of salicylaldehyde and then reduction of the carbonyl (Figure 4.27). Salicin is responsible for the analgesic and antipyretic effects of willow barks, widely used for centuries, and the template for synthesis of acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) (Figure 4.27) as a more effective analogue. 

Methyl salicylate, the active flavor compound in wintergreen candy, is composed of two fragments resembling structures from the above hst of compounds. These fragments are illustrated below and relate to salicylic acid and methyl alcohol.

Tests for Methyl Alcohol.—(a) Methyl salicylate.—Mix together in a test-tube about 0.2 gram of salicylic acid, 1 cc. of concentrated sulphuric acid, and 1 cc. of methyl alcohol, and warm gently. Note and describe the odor. The compound formed is the methyl ester of a salicylic acid, HO.C6H4.COOCH3.

Place 3 ml of methyl alcohol and 1 g of salicylic acid in a large (20 mm X 150 mm) test tube. Mix the reactants with a glass stirring rod.

Methyl Alcohol, CH3OH.—Compounds occur in certain plants from which methyl alcohol can be easily obtained in small quantities. When methyl salicylate (oil of wintergreen), which is present in checkerberries, is heated with a solution of sodium hydroxide, methyl alcohol and the sodium salt of salicylic acid are obtained. The alcohol is formed, along with other substances, when wood is subjected to destructive distillation. This method is used in the industrial preparation of methyl alcohol, which is commercially known as wood-spirit. 

An additional method of ACEC synthesis was based on hydroxybenzoic acids as the starting materials [32]. The synthesis starts from esterification of the acid with 3-cyclohexenyl-1-methyl alcohol. The following hydroxybenzoic acids were used 2-hydroxybenzoic (salicylic), 2,4-di-hydroxybenzoic ( 3-resorcylic) and 3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoic (gallic) acid. The phenolic hydroxyls in the cy-clohexenylmethyl esters were transformed in glycidyl ethers in the usual way (reaction with excess ECH followed by dehydrochlorination). Eventually, epoxidation with PAA was carried out (Scheme 51). The epoxide groups content in the ACECs thus prepared was above 85% of the calculated value.
