Metal mechanisms

Plastic working of a metal such as steel is the permanent deformation accompHshed by applying mechanical forces to a metal surface. The primary objective is usually the production of a specific shape or si2e (mechanical shaping), although increasingly it also involves the improvement of certain physical and mechanical properties of the metal (mechanical treatment). These two objectives can be readily attained simultaneously. [Pg.383]

By far, the largest appHcation of zinc powder is for solution purification in electrolytic zinc plants. This appHcation consumed an estimated 17,700 t of powder in 1980. Zinc powder is also used in primary batteries, frictional materials, spray metallizing, mechanical plating, and chemical formulations. [Pg.415]

The tips used for STM experiments should be sharp and stable. Chemical stability can be achieved by using a noble metal. Mechanical rigidity can be reached by short wires. Alloys of Pt and Ir are frequently used for fabrication of STM tips. They can be produced in a surprisingly simple way just by cutting a metal wire with conventional cutting tools. Because of their high chemical stability, such Pt/Ir tips are well... [Pg.286]

Medium- to heavy-density mineral wool mat with wire netting or expanded metal mechanically secured on one or both sides. Mattress-type products are used for irregular-shaped surfaces and on large pipes and vessels. It is also used as large-cavity fire barriers. [Pg.119]

Lead is characterised by a series of anodic corrosion products which give a film or coating that effectively insulates the metal mechanically from the electrolyte (e.g. PbS04, PbClj, PbjO, PbCrO<. PbO, PbO, 2PbC03.Pb<0H)z), of which PbS04 and Pb02 are the most important, since they play a part in batteries and anodes. Lead sulphate is important also in atmospheric passivation and chemical industry applications. [Pg.724]

Thermoplastics which are used for corrosion protection can be applied in coatings as thin as 0.025 mm by solution techniques and in excess of 5 mm by extrusion or plastisol dipping. They are used where environmental resistance, chemical resistance, abrasion resistance, sound deadening or cushioning are required. They are used in those market areas that necessitate metallic mechanical strength plus thermoplastic corrosion resistance. [Pg.745]

A comparison of the X-ray crystal structures of the enzyme in its native state with that of a complex with an inhibitor can provide clues as to which of these three mechanistic possibilities is operative. In most cases the location of the bridging water in the inhibitor complex is diagnostic of the role of the metal ions in catalysis. For example, if this water is present in the inhibitor complex and if the inhibitor is coordinated to the metal, mechanism (a) is probable. However, if... [Pg.150]

The acid demetallation mechanism is simpler than the metallation mechanism.18 In general, the rate law is expressed as d[H4Por2+]/df = k[M(Por)][H+]" [n = 1-3 depending on the stability of M(Por)] where aggregation is negligible, and N protonation induces the metal dissociation. [Pg.818]

Mechanism of E.coli RNase H The metal-dependence of the RNase H reaction mechanism is not well understood. Currently there are two primary mechanisms that have been proposed a one-metal mechanism and a two-metal activation mechanism. In light of the information presented in this paper, and in the context of information that has been gathered on the RNase H family of enzymes, we hypothesize that the RNase H mechanism is a single-divalent catalyzed reaction that can be attenuated by a second metal binding event. This hypothesis encompasses all of the seemingly contradictory information that has been presented to defend both the one and two-metal mechanisms. [Pg.414]
