The effects of cocaine on cognitive functions have been measured in controlled studies. The preliminary results of a study of 20 heavy cocaine abusers and a group of matched controls showed impaired function on neuropsychological tests in 50% of the abusers compared with 15% of the controls (169). There were problems with concentration, memory, problem-solving, and abstract thinking in the cocaine users. The heavy users had the greatest loss of memory. Recent cocaine use was associated with poorer oral fluency and arithmetic scores. [Pg.504]

Though I never had the privilege of working on catalysis with the late Dr. Otto Beeck, I knew most of his colleagues in that field as friends and talked on many occasions with them, and occasionally with him, about their work. For what follows, I have drawn upon my memory, recent conversations with J. W. Otvos, A. W. Ritchie, Fred Rust and A. E. Smith, the published literature and a brief biography that I wrote in 1962 (] ). ... [Pg.153]

MOPAC 2000 is the most recent commercial version of MOPAC. It includes improvements in a number of areas. The MNDO/d and AMl-d Hamiltonians are also now available. The program uses dynamic memory allocation. This results in calculations requiring less memory for small molecules and at the... [Pg.342]

Environmental exposures to PCBs are significantly lower than those reported in the workplace and are therefore unlikely to cause adverse human health effects in adults. However, it is apparent from the results of several recent studies on children that there was a correlation between in utero exposure to PCBs, eg, cord blood levels, and developmental deficits (65—68) including reduced bkth weight, neonatal behavior anomaUes, and poorer recognition memories. At four years of age, there was stiU a correlation between prenatal PCB exposure levels and short-term memory function (verbal and quantitative). In these studies the children were all exposed to relatively low environmental levels of PCBs. Although these effects may be related to other contaminants, it is clear that this is an area of concern regarding the potential adverse human health impacts of PCBs. [Pg.66]

It is known that the brain is one of the most sensitive sites of action of steroids in utero, and recently there have been suggestions that EDs may affect normal brain development and behaviour. For example, it has been alleged that in utero exposure to polychlorinated biphenyl compounds (PCBs) resulted in adverse effects on neurologic and intellectual function (memory and attention) in young children born to women who had eaten PCB contaminated fish in the USA." It has also been speculated that exposure to environmental pollutants with steroidal activity may be infinencing human sexual development and sexually controlled behavioiir." ... [Pg.7]

Few areas of organic medicinal chemistry in recent memory have had so many closely spaced pulses of intense research activity as the prostaglandins. Following closely on the heels of the discovery of the classical monocyclic prostaglandins (prostaglandin El, F2, A2, etc.), with their powerful associated activities, for example, oxytocic, blood pressure regulating, and inflammatory, was the discovery of the bicyclic analogues (the thromboxanes, prostacyclin) with their profound effects on hemodynamics and platelet function. More recently, the non-... [Pg.1]

In recent years increasing attention has been paid to the possibility of delaying or even reversing the memory loss that accompanies old age or the more tragic loss of human capabilities associated with premature senility - Alzheimer s disease. Progress is hampered by the difficulty of identifying suitable animal tests, and there is presently no reliable therapy. [Pg.127]

Finally, Table 10 shows the specifications of secondary lithium-manganese dioxide batteries. Recently, the use of these batteries as sources for memory backup has expanded remarkably [47]. [Pg.43]

Often referred to as short-term memory loss , this form of amnesia results in the inability to transfer new events to long term memory. The sufferer will still be able to recall older memories but will not be able to remember recent events once attention has been switched to something else. [Pg.91]

Within the nervous system, ChEs were shown to be involved in membrane conductance and transmission of excitatory amino acids, learning and memory, neurite growth, neuritic translocation and acute stress reactions. Recent findings propose AChE s involvement in apoptosome formation [2]. [Pg.358]

One Important aspect of the supercomputer revolution that must be emphasized Is the hope that not only will It allow bigger calculations by existing methods, but also that It will actually stimulate the development of new approaches. A recent example of work along these lines Involves the solution of the Hartree-Fock equations by numerical Integration In momentum space rather than by expansion In a basis set In coordinate space (2.). Such calculations require too many fioatlng point operations and too much memory to be performed In a reasonable way on minicomputers, but once they are begun on supercomputers they open up several new lines of thinking. [Pg.5]
