Case History From

The selection process of retrieving these case histories from the 18,000 is based on the availability of rich accident data located within the chemical process industry. A detailed discussion of the selection process can be found in Chapters 3 and 6. [Pg.39]

I had no support system there, so I started a HEAL chapter. What happened was, I started to get phone calls from people complaining about conditions in their children s schools. I thought maybe this was an area I needed to look into, so I started doing research. Nobody seemed to have any research on sick schools, so I just started collecting case histories from these parents and, eventually, from teachers who felt the school environment compromised their health. And gradually I started finding bits and pieces about the connection between environmental exposure and brain function—short-term memory loss, the ability to access, store and retrieve information, all of that kind of neurobiology as it related to the environment. [Pg.112]

Abstract The discovery in the 1960s to early 1970s that rock geochemistry could be used to detect mineral deposits under 50-100 metres of post-mineralization rocks was probably one of the first indications that that geochemistry could be used for deep exploration. Some case histories from Cyprus and Canada are presented to illustrate this. The second important impetus to considering deep exploration was research into the mechanisms involved in the formation of anomalies. This led to the proposal of electrochemical models and the measurement of unconventional parameters such as pH, conductivity in water slurries of samples as well as measurement of elements in dilute leaches including water. These developments are illustrated by case histories from Canada and Australia. [Pg.47]

In four case histories from the CSIRO study, soil gas was collected in addition to soil. In the example of the Currawang deposit, a soil-gas Hg anomaly of about twice background occurs in association with a soil anomaly of about 100 times background (Fig. 12-34). The detection limit of Hg in soil gas was 0.07 ng/L and the background levels were in the range 0.1-0.2 ng/L. In two other examples, the Woodcutters Zn-Pb deposit (Roberts, 1973) and the Ranger IV U deposit, both in the Northern Territory, Hg soil anomalies, but not soil-gas anomalies, were detected. In the fourth example, the Jabiluka U-Au deposit, a soil-gas anomaly was present but not a soil anomaly (Fig. 12-22). [Pg.433]

Despite the common assumption of fault sealing in hydrocarbon fields, very few faults have been characterised in the detail needed which allows identification of the sealing mechanism or controls. Without the construction of a robust set of case histories from such analysis, future seal evaluation will remain a high risk venture. These case histories are also needed to integrate seal behaviour with pressure test, production and in situ stress analysis. The paper has highlighted the importance of an integrated approach from micro to macro and stressed the value of core-based studies to quantify fault rock properties, sub-seismic fault populations and sealing mechanisms. [Pg.36]

A recent British publication reports that flexible hoses account for about 10% of all the 718 loss of containment incidents that were reported and they studied in an 11 year period. The next chapter will provide details from that British study, along with two case histories from the US Chemical Safety Board and a number of case histories, which could have also been reported as one-minute modifications. The present chapter will highhght a faulty one-minute type hose repair, which resulted in a fierce fire. [Pg.221]

The Yacambu-Quibor tunnel in Venezuela illustrates how a case history from the literature can be employed to emphasize the importance of geology in underground constructions.
