Memorization

The systematic lUPAC nomenclature of compounds tries to characterize compounds by a unique name. The names are quite often not as compact as the trivial names, which are short and simple to memorize. In fact, the lUPAC name can be quite long and cumbersome. This is one reason why trivial names are still heavily used today. The basic aim of the lUPAC nomenclature is to describe particular parts of the structure (fi agments) in a systematic manner, with special expressions from a vocabulary of terms. Therefore, the systematic nomenclature can be, and is, used in database systems such as the Chemical Abstracts Service (see Section 5.4) as index for chemical structures. However, this notation does not directly allow the extraction of additional information about the molecule, such as bond orders or molecular weight. [Pg.21]

Present-day nomenclature is partly the result of the conflict and interplay of two functions the need to communicate in speech and on the printed page on the one hand, and the need for archival storage of information and its efficient, reliable retrieval. The former function came first, and laid the basis for the nomenclature most commonly used even today, and gave birth to a wealth of trivial names (i.e. names that give little or no information on structure). These were often coined on the basis of the origin of the substance, as in the case of collidine, obtained from distillation of bones in glue factories, or were derived from a special characteristic, as in the case of skatole, which has a fecal odor. The definition of a drug differs between dictionaries and among the various professional specialisms. A search of the internet elicited various definitions and a paraphrase of the most memorable is a compound can be defined as a drug if, when injected into a rodent, it yields a scientific publication . In neural network design, the above parameters have no precise number/answers because it is dependent on the particular application. However, the question is worth addressing. In general, the more patterns and the fewer hidden neurons to be used, the better the network. It should be realized that there is a subtle relationship between the number of patterns and the number of hidden layer neurons. Having too few patterns or too many hidden neurons can cause the network to memorize. When memorization occurs, the network would perform well during training, but tests poorly with a new data set. [Pg.9]

A network that is too large may require a large number of training patterns in order to avoid memorization and training time, while one that is too small may not train to an acceptable tolerance. Cybenko [30] has shown that one hidden layer with homogenous sigmoidal output functions is sufficient to form an arbitrary close approximation to any decisions boundaries for the outputs. They are also shown to be sufficient for any continuous nonlinear mappings. In practice, one hidden layer was found to be sufficient to solve most problems for the cases considered in this chapter. Straight-chain alkanes are named according to the number of carbon atoms they contain, as shown in Table 3.3. With the exception of the first four compounds—methane, ethane, propane, and butane—whose names have historical roots, the alkanes are named based on Greek numbers. The suffix -one is added to the end of each name to indicate that the molecule identified is an alkane. Thus, pentane is the five-carbon alkane, hexeme is the six-carbon alkane, and so on. The common names of these simple alkyl groups are so well entrenched in the chemical literature that IUPAC rules make allowance for them.
