Membrane-modulating agent

Babcock ( ) also reported pilot plant uranium and chromium recovery projects using ILMs. Membrane modules were constructed with hollow fiber polysulfone supports containing kerosene solutions of commercially available hydrometallurgical complexatlon agents such as tertiary amines. Operating coats for the extraction step calculated from uranium recovery data were 0.8/kg Ur for a 3.8 x 10 ra /day plant which were superior to costs associated with solvent extraction and ion-exchange. [Pg.118]

The direct cost of one-time investment of ultrafiltration membrane modules was about 150 CN Y/m. The annual operation costs of the membrane modules consist of energy consumption of pumps and air compressors, and consumption of chemical agent. The running cost of treating SFBW by ultrafiltration is shown in Table 5. [Pg.176]

The third liquid-membrane technique is the hollow fiber contained liquid membrane (HFCLM). In the SLM/ ILM technique, the liquid membrane is in contact with the feed liquid/feed gas and the strip liquid/permeate gas. The membrane liquid may be lost by solubilization/volatiliza-tion in addition, there may be irreversible reactions with extractants, complexing agents inside the liquid membrane, which could reduce the performance over time. The HFCLM structure can take care of such problems. In this structure (Figure 8.1.50), the membrane module (cylindrical or otherwise) has two sets of porous hollow fiber membranes. The shell-side interstitial space between the fibers is filled with a liquid acting as the membrane. If this membrane liquid wets the membrane pores and is therefore present in the pores, the pressure conditions in the feed liquid and the sweep/strip fluid should be such (higher) that the membrane liquid is not dispersed in the feed/sweep/stilp fluids. If the membrane liquid does not wet the membrane pores, but the feed/sweep fluids do, then the membrane liquid pressure should be higher than the feed/sweep fluid pressures. [Pg.770]

The hollow fiber membrane module assembles a shell-and-tube heat exchanger. It consists of a large number of hollow fibers assembled in a module, as shown schematically in Figure 5.8. The free ends of the fibers are potted with agents such as epoxy resins, polyurethanes, silicone rubber, thermoplastics, thermosets or inorganic cements. In some cases they can also be fused by heating. [Pg.151]

The ability of doxombicin formulated with the copolymer to avoid accumulation in acidic cytoplasmic vesicles is probably the most important contributor to its mechanism of action. Resistance-modulating agents and some polymer conjugates can partially reduce the dmg resistance mediated by ATP-dependent transporters by either directly inhibiting these transporters , or by switehing the dmg transport from passive diffusion to endocytosis. At the same time, they cannot overcome the endosomal barrier that represents the seeond level of resistance in drug resistant cells. The fact that Pluronic L61/doxombicin can effectively penetrate the plasma membrane of resistant cells and, at the same time, avoid sequestration in the vesicles suggests that this product may be more clinically effective than other doxombicin-based products. [Pg.129]

Conventional and novel PKC isozymes are potently activated by phorbol esters, heterocyclic compounds found in the milky sap exuded by plants of the Euphorbiaccae family. This sap was used medicinally as a counterirritant and cathartic agent over the millennia we now know that the active ingredients, phorbol esters, specifically bind to the Cl domain, the diacylglycerol sensor described above. In fact, their ability to recruit PKC to membranes is so effective that phorbol esters cause maximal activation of conventional PKCs, bypassing the requirement for Ca2+. This module is found in a number of other proteins in addition to PKC, so the profound effects of phorbol esters on cells are mediated by other proteins in addition to PKC. [Pg.1008]

Configurations used include tubes, plate-and-frame arrangements and spiral wound modules. Spiral wound modules should be treated to remove particles down to 20 to 50. im, while hollow fiber modules require particles down to 5 im to be removed. If necessary, pH should be adjusted to avoid extremes of pH. Also, oxidizing agents such as free chlorine must be removed. Because of these restrictions, reverse osmosis is only useful if the wastewater to be treated is free of heavy contamination. The concentrated waste material produced by membrane processes should be recycled if possible but might require further treatment or disposal. [Pg.586]

Ajoene has antitumor activity, inhibits cholesterol biosynthesis, modulates membrane-dependent functions of immune cells, inhibits protein prenylation83 and is an anti-leukaemia agent for acute myeloid leukaemia.85 In antithrombotic assays, the Z isomer is more active than the E isomer.84... [Pg.692]
