As one of the indispensable software tools, the compound registration system provides a mechanism for the medicinal chemist to capture chemical structure information as well as analytical and other data in a database. We mention two of the systems below. 

Thus, in silico models are by no means self-sufficient. They are irreplaceable for the future progress of bio-medicine. They do not aim, however, to substitute but to improve bio-medical research, which will remain indispensable, not the least for model development and validation.

Abstract Fluorescent molecules have been widely used as biomolecular labels, enzyme substrates, environmental indicators, and cellular stains and thus constitute indispensable tools in chemistry, physics, biology, and medicinal sciences. The large variation in the photophysics of the available fluorophores connected with chemical alterations give fluorescent probe techniques an almost unlimited scope for the detection of specific molecules and the investigation of intermolecular interactions on a molecular scale. 

Special optical fibres have been intensively investigated during recent years because of their potential wide-range use for on-line monitoring of material properties or processes in a number of areas of human activity (environment protection, food industry, medicine etc.) Their technology can be considered an integral part of the team-work on optical fibre sensors development. Despite special optical fibres represent a unique and often indispensable tool for a variety of sensor applications, special fibre production still represents only a small fraction of the market. Probably it is because of their low consumption (in comparison with standard telecommunication fibres), the need for much more advanced know-how and lower reproducibility. 

At the Institute for Bioethics, Health Policy and Law at the University of Louisville, my colleague Gabriela Alcalde helped me in conceptualizing the key issues and also took the lead in drafting two articles we coauthored on the topic. Dr. Mary Anderlik coauthored a paper with me on genetic research in which pharmacogenomics was a key element. Dr. Carl Hornung of the Department of Medicine contributed indispensable data analysis on the survey and coauthored Chapter 1 of this volume. 

Medline. The Medline data base, which comes from the National Library of Medicine, is a superb, indispensable reference library that is particularly strong in its wide coverage of research activities in the biomedical literature. It also encompasses the areas of clinical medicine, health policy, and health care services. Each year, over 300,000 articles are reviewed and indexed into the data base. The full bibliographic citations of these articles, usually including the abstract of the published work, are available from numerous vendors in CD-ROM format and are usually updated on a monthly basis.
