Monocyclic and Bicyclic aromatic heterocycles such as imidazoles, thiazoles, thiadiazoles, oxazoles, oxadiazoles quinazolines, indoles, benzimidazoles, purines pyrido[43-d]pyri-midines, thiazolo[5,4-d]pyrimidines, thiazolo[4,5-d]pyrimidines, oxazolo[5,4-d]pyrimi-dines and thieno[2,3-d]pyrimidines are renowned pharmacophores in drug discovery. These special structures are well explained and exemplified in chemical compound libraries. In this chapter, several types of thiazole based heterocyclic scaffolds such as mono-cyclic or bicyclic systems synthesis and their biological activities studies are presented, which are not frequently present in books and reviews. We mention the first importance of synthetic route of various thiazole based compounds and their applications in medicinal chemistry in this chapter.

Fabrizio Machetti studied at the University of Firenze where he graduated in chemistry in 1992 in the group of Prof. Antonio Guarna. Subsequently he received his Ph.D. from the same university in 1996 under the co-supervision of Prof Francesco De Sarlo and Prof. Alberto Brandi working on the synthesis of peptidomimetic compounds. Since 2001, he has been a CNR research scientist focusing on new methodologies for the stereoselective synthesis of heterocyclic compounds and their applications to medicine and biotechnology.

The presented review article on the enantioseparations of the monoterpenoids and biological activity of their enantiomers point to significant development of knowledge on this area. The review article from 1991 seems to confirm this statement [122], But from the other hand there are still many questions to answer particulary on biological activity of compounds of wide application in medicine, foodstuff, beverages and cosmetics. 

An introduction to the preparation of esters and their applications in synthesis is followed by the chemistry of ethers and sulfur compounds. Alcohols, ethers, and their sulfur analogs occur widely in nature aud have numerous applications in indnstry and medicine.
