Bren, Linda. Frances Oldham Kelsey FDA Medical Reviewer Leaves Her Mark on History. FDA Consumer 35, no. 2 (March/April 2001) 24-29. This article tells the story behind Kelsey s actions to block the approval of thalidomide and prevent the epidemic of birth defects that occurred in Europe from playing out in the United States. When working for the FDA, she demanded better studies of the drug s long-term safety, after which evidence of harm from Europe emerged and justified her careful approach. [Pg.147]

To make his case, Kessler cited the example of a drug called Dilevalol, which he said was approved in Japan, Portugal, and England on the basis of data summaries. Americans, he said, were spared morbidity and mortality because the FDA medical reviewer noted in the raw data evidence that some patients had severe liver injury. Another untruth. A control process will address four areas service quality, patient/client satisfaction, financial performance, and service growth. Service quality will be assessed by using a brief report card to evaluate the quality of a sample of the written reports of medication reviews. An annual survey of patient/client satisfaction with the service processes and outcomes will allow evaluation of patient satisfaction. The pharmacy s income statement will be developed to monitor the financial performance of the new programs. This will include service revenue, associated costs, and any net profit. Service growth will be tracked by tabulating the number of service clients and the number of service episodes each month. [Pg.377]

The last step in creating a service blueprint is to add evidence of service where appropriate. This means that tangible components are incorporated into the service. Such evidence can be used by patients to evaluate a service. For example, the written report for the medication review gives a patient something that helps him or her put a value on the service. Tangible evidence should have a natural fit with the service. [Pg.379]
