I had enough sense to avoid the medical Web sites completely. Had I not, I m sure I would have diagnosed myself as having everything from hostile cervical mucus to premature ovarian failure (even if it doesn t affect women under forty). 

The World Wide Web has transformed the way in which we obtain and analyze published information on proteins. What only a few years ago would take days or weeks and require the use of expensive computer workstations can now be achieved in a few minutes or hours using personal computers, both PCs and Macintosh, connected to the internet. The Web contains hundreds of sites of Interest to molecular biologists, many of which are listed in Pedro s BioMolecular Research Tools (http // www.fmi.ch/biology/research tools.html). Many sites provide free access to databases that make it very easy to obtain information on structurally related proteins, the amino acid sequences of homologous proteins, relevant literature references, medical information and metabolic pathways. This development has opened up new opportunities for even non-specialists to view and manipulate a structure of interest or to carry out amino-acid sequence comparisons, and one can now rapidly obtain an overview of a particular area of molecular biology. We shall here describe some Web sites that are of interest from a structural point of view. The Japanese regulatory authority is the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MHW) and the Pharmaceutical and Medical Safety Bureau (PSMB) is responsible for the promulgation of national and international guidelines in the form of Notifications. Guidelines are available on the Internet web-site of the National Institute of Health and Science (http //www.nihs.go.jp). The MHW has not issued specific guidance on the development of chiral drugs, but has nonetheless responded to the enantiomer-versus-racemate scientific debate. The attitude of the MHW and its advisory body, the Central Pharmaceutical Affairs Council (CPAC) is discussed in two articles by Shindo and Caldwell published in 1991 and 1995 [17, 18]. The latter paper analyzes the results of a survey of the Japanese pharmaceutical industry which sought responses on chirality issues. 

The distribution of contamination on the body and other relevant information (e.g., locations of wounds) should be recorded. Administrative information that should also be recorded includes the patient s name the name of the individual conducting the survey the time, date, and location of the survey, and the serial number and type of instrument. A survey form with a diagram of an anatomical figure (Standard Form 531) is available from the U.S. General Services Administration s web site (http //www.gsa.gov/forms/medical.htm) and is suitable for this purpose. 

Beyond these, MEDLINEplus contains a very patient-friendly encyclopedia covering every aspect of medicine (licensed from A.D.A.M., Inc.). The ADAM Medical Encyclopedia can be accessed at http //www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/encyclopedia.html. ADAM is also available on commerdal Web sites such as drkoop.com (httpv/www.drkoop.conV) and Web MD (http my.webmd.com/adam/asset/adam disease articles/a to z/a). 

Medically oriented organization that seeks to educate and to strengthen gun control to reduce gun violence. Their web site provides news summaries, policy statements, and help for survivors of shootings. 

In recent years there have been a range of recommendations regarding the structure of publications how they should be laid out and what they should contain. These have usually been in the form of checklists and all of this has been encapsulated within the CONSORT statement (Moher et al. (2001) and Altman et al. (2001)). CONSORT is an acronym for Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials and increasingly many medical journals have adopted this guidance in terms of requiring their clinical trial publications to conform to it. Drugs.com. Drug Information Online. Available online. URL http // www.drugs.com. Downloaded June 16, 2009. Self-identified as a free, accurate, and independent source of information on 24,000 prescription drugs, OTC medicines, and natural products, this Web site does indeed contain an enormous amount of information on prescription drugs. The descriptions of drugs are clearly written and detailed, and daily medical news stories and pharmaceutical industry news offer added information. Without a specific topic or question of interest, however, the sheer amount of information makes the material overwhelming. 

The Web sites on antidepressants appear to market the products directly to women, often without clear medical justification. 

Privacy. Respect the privacy and confidentiality of personal data submitted to the site by the visitor. Confidentiality of data relating to individual patients and visitors to a medical/health Web site, including their identity, is respected by this Web site. The Web site owners undertake to honor or exceed the legal requirements of medical/health information privacy that apply in the country and state where the Web site and mirror sites are located.

This increased information is likely to come from a number of sources. The popularity of web-based medical advice sites (independent, disease association sponsored, and drug manufacturer sponsored) has already been established. These sites serve both the general public directly and the medical establishment which in turn informs (often with clarification and interpretation) the public. Use of such sites is likely to increase as patients and their providers seek more and better sources of detailed information.

On June 15, 2005, in a multicase product liability suit, Eli Lilly settled for 690 million. Most of the case involved life-threatening diabetes caused by Zyprexa. I was hired as a medical expert by Hersh and Hersh, a California law firm involved in that multisuit, multistate legal action, and had the opportunity to evaluate sometimes lethal cases of diabetes and pancreatitis caused by Zyprexa. Medical students at several universities launched boycotts of sales-rep pizzas and pens. Dr. Delman, the medical affairs vice president in Long Island, says he has never been on a drug company outing and doesn t even go to the supposedly educational dinners.
