While the role of IL-6 as a co-stimulator of activated B and T lymphocytes could suggest a medical role in potentiating the immune response, clinical interest has focused upon its ability to inhibit the growth of some cancer cells and stimulate haematopoietic cell growth in vitro. 

Zinc in metalloenzymes may (i) participate directly in the catalytic process, (ii) serve to stabilize protein structure or (iii) have a regulatory role. In each case, removal of the metal from the holoenzyme generally results in an apoprotein having no catalytic activity. The enzymes considered briefly below provide examples of each of these functions of Zn. The new discipline of pharmaceutical medicine is a speciality which has only very recently become recognized in its own right as a speciality within medicine. Indeed, the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine of the Royal Colleges of Physicians was only founded in 1989 in the United Kingdom and the Academy in the United States even more recently in 1993. Like many new ventures, this new medical speciality is not seen by all today as one of the premiere medical roles. The proposition that cannabidiol (CBD), a nonpsychoactive component of the cannabis plant, possesses considerable antipsychotic activity (Znardi and Gmmaraes, 1997) is supportive of the self-medication role of cannabis in the disorder, but this action is not via the cannabinoid CBj receptor. 

There is a great deal of work yet to be done on the naturally-occurring protein and peptide inhibitors of enzymes. Better knowledge of their properties and their physiological, nutritional and medical roles is essential. 

One of the most demanding and exciting roles that a polymer chemist can play in the next few decades is that of molecular artisan for medicine. Plastics are found in implants and components for reconstmctive surgery, as components in medical instmments, equipment, packaging materials, and in a wide array of medical disposables. Plastics have assumed many of the roles once restricted to metals and ceramics. 

Because each center has its own rules and regulations, the best way to understand FDA s regulatory role is to review FDA s regulation of dmg, biologic, medical device, food, veterinary, and cosmetic products separately. 

Acute and Chronic Toxicity. Although chromium displays nine oxidation states, the low oxidation state compounds, -II to I, all require Special conditions for existence and have very short lifetimes in a normal environment. This is also tme for most organ ochromium compounds, ie, compounds containing Cr—C bonds. Chromium compounds that exhibit stabiUty under the usual ambient conditions are limited to oxidation states II, III, IV, V, and VI. Only Cr(III) and Cr(VI) compounds are produced in large quantities and are accessible to most of the population. Therefore, the toxicology of chromium compounds has been historically limited to these two states, and virtually all of the available information is about compounds of Cr(III) and/or Cr(VI) (59,104). However, there is some indication that Cr(V) may play a role in chromium toxicity (59,105—107). Reference 104 provides an overview and summary of the environmental, biological, and medical effects of chromium and chromium compounds as of the late 1980s. 

Analytical instruments play an increasingly important role in modern analytical chemistry. The trend is not limited in chemistry but in all phases of natural science and technology, as one easily can watch in rapid progresses in molecular biology, nano-materials technology, and the related bio-medical reseai ch. Instiaimental developments can now even be a determining factor in the advancement of science itself. 

Since it possesses good properties of both PVC plastics and polyurethane elastomers, it has been used in those areas where PVC and polyurethane have traditionally played dominant roles. For example, it is a very promising replacement for flexible PVC used for medical purposes and in the food industry [I6,l7], because it essentially eliminates the concern regarding plasticizer contamination. It has been used in combination with the copolymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile (NBR) to make the abrasion-resistant aprons and rolls used on textile machines [18]. A PVC/TPU/ABS blend serves as a substitute for leather [19]. This could have a tremendous impact on the shoe industry. It has also been found to have an application as a building coating [20,21]. This trend will certainly grow and more applications will be found. This in turn should bring new developments in the material itself. 

With new plastics and processing techniques always becoming available, the design challenge becomes easier, even when taking today s solid-waste problem into account. Today s plastics and processes allow designers to incorporate and interrelate all the aspects of success. In products such as electronics, medical devices, transportation controls, and many others where user-friendly design is required, it has to be obvious to all that plastics play an important role. 

Nurses play an important role in monitoring for adverse readions. The FDA considers serious adverse readions those that may result in death, life-threatening illness, hospitalization, or disability or those that may require medical or surgical intervention.
