Filter media efficiency tests are made using dilute suspensions of standard particles. A wide variety of test powders is available, in fine and coarse grades. Industrial users will tend to use a test mixture typical of the products of interest, e.g. yeast in the browing industry. In the gaseous field, both solid (sub-micron sodium chlorid crystals) and liquid particles (di-octyl phthalate dispersion) are used. [Pg.136]

Particulate filtration removes suspended liquid or solid materials whose size, shape, and mass allow them to remain airborne at the air velocity conditions present. Filters are available in a range of efficiencies, with higher efficiency indicating removal of a greater proportion of particles and of smaller particles. Moving to medium efficiency pleated filters is advisable to improve lAQ and increase protection for equipment. However, the higher the efficiency of the filter, the more it will increase the pressure drop within the air distribution system and reduce total airflow (unless other adjustments are made to compensate). It is important to select an appropriate filter for the specific application and to make sure that the HVAC system will continue to perform as designed. Filters are rated by different standards which measure different aspects of performance. [Pg.232]

The type of distribution to select depends on the sensitivity of the tower performance to the liquid distribution as discussed earlier. Norton s [83] data indicate that the sensitivity of tower performance to liquid distribution quality depends only on the number of theoretical stages in each bed of packing achierable at its System Base HETP [83]. Tower beds of high efficiency packing are more sensitive to liquid distribution quality than shorter beds of medium efficiency packing [83]. It is important to extend the uniformity of the distributor all the way to within one packing particle diameter of the tower wall [85]. [Pg.268]

The reductive cleavage of the N-O bond in the isoxazolidine 162 unmasks the 1,3-amino alcohol moiety. Thus, isoxazolidines can be viewed as direct precursors of 7-amino alcohols. The reductive cleavage of the cycloadduct proved difficult. W2 Raney-Ni and nickel boride were both ineffective. In contrast, nickel-aliminium alloy in an alkaline medium efficiently reduced the N-O bond at room temperature in the presence of a base (Equation 27) <1997TA109>. [Pg.65]

The products 109 are versatile precursors for bicyclic tetrahydro-2-furanones and -furans °. The tributylstannane rac-109d undergoes a kinetic resolution of medium efficiency when it is treated with MeLi/(—)-sparteine (equation 24) °. The substitution products 109b and the less reactive enantiomer ewt-109d are obtained with medium enantioselectivity. [Pg.1078]

The use of a convective macroporous polymer as an alternative support material instead of silica for the preparation of protein-based CSPs has successfully been demonstrated by Hofstetter et al. [221]. Enantioseparation was performed using a polymeric flow-through-type chromatographic support (POROS-EP, 20 pm polymer particles with epoxy functionalities) and covalently bound BSA as chiral SO. Using flow rates of up to 10 ml/min, rapid enantiomer separation of acidic compounds, including a variety of amino acid derivatives and drugs, could be achieved within a few minutes at medium efficiencies, typical for protein chiral stationary phases (Fig. 9.13). [Pg.384]

The most common procedure for large-scale aerobic fermentations is to use deep tanks of a stirred liquid medium. Efficient air exchange is obtained by continuous pumping of sterile air into crossed or coiled perforated pipe placed at the bottom of the tank at rates of up to one volume of air per unit of medium volume per minute [62]. This method promotes aerobic growth throughout the medium, which accomplishes large volume production in a limited space. But it also has problems, which relate to the maintenance of sterility and occasionally from foam formation. Overall, however, submerged... [Pg.542]

The X-point for the system under consideration lies at 8 = 0.276 and y = 0.161, which shows that the surfactant/co-surfactant mixture (3-C8Gi/C8E0 solubilises water and n-octane with a medium efficiency. The use of nitromethane as a probe of basicity of zeolites (NaX, CsX, CsX 9Cs) and mixed oxides, Mg(Al)0, is discussed. Various species (physisorbed nitromethane, aci-anion nitromethane, and methazonate salt analogue) formed upon nitromethane adsorption were characterized by C MAS NMR spectroscopy. Heterogeneous base catalysis of the Michael addition of nitromethane on cyclohex-2-en-1-one was also studied. Low rates were obtained for catalysts showing only nitromethane physisorption. Formation of aci-anion nitromethane was observed for solids of medium efficiency correlation of the chemical shift with the initial rate was established. Finally, the decrease of Lewis acidity and concomitant increase of basicity led to methazonate formation and to the more efficient catalysts. [Pg.232]

The kinetics of aqueous dispersion polymerization differ very little from acrylonitrile bulk or emulsion polymerization. Redox initiation is normally used in commercial production of polymers for acrylic fibers. This type of initiator can generate free radicals in an aqueous medium efficiently at relatively low temperatures. The most common redox system consists of ammonium or potassium persulfate (oxidizer), sodium bisulfite (reducing agent), and ferric or ferrous iron (catalyst). This system gives the added benefit of supplying dye sites for the fiber. [Pg.826]

The authors experimental design included the use of four medium-efficiency fibreglass filter papers of very low variability in order to effectively evaluate filter penetration versus particle diameter. HEDP acts as an anodic inhibitor of medium efficiency for carbon steel corrosion in a neutral, oxygen-containing solution (Kalman et al., 1994). It was found that inhibition may be enhanced by various chemical additives. The salts of bivalent cations (such as Zn " and Ca ) are often applied as additives (Kuznetsov, 1996 Kdlman, 1994 ... [Pg.503]

Class of active compounds (medium-efficiency 5-LOX inhibitors) ... [Pg.248]

The boundary criteria between high- and medium-efficiency classes were the numerical values for a natural compound in the Ml training series, curcumin (IC g- 2.7 M, Tables 22.2 and 22.3), and the active ingredient of the preparation zileuton, Af-(l-benzothien-2-ylethyl)-JV-hydroxy-urea (IC5q= 0.9 M, Table 22.3), which are reference selective inhibitors of 5-LOX enzyme activity [11]. [Pg.249]

Also, the majority of researchers consider compounds with ICjq> 7 -10 M to be medium-efficiency 5-LOX inhibitors [12-14], The deciding set of descriptor (DSD) of the two models was tested on structures of two examination sets containing 25 and 22 compounds for models Ml and M2, respectively, with known inhibiting activity for 5-LOX. Data on their inhibiting activity were obtained under analogous experimental conditions by binding to rat blood cells [11-14]. The basic principles implemented in SARD-21 did not enable the analyzed structures to be examined as a sequence of chemically bonded atoms. Rather, each structure was represented as a set of fragment descriptors (FD). As a result, the stereochemistry was not considered in the analysis of the structural information. [Pg.251]

Joint analysis of FD of both models revealed fragments characteristic of high- and medium-efficiency 5-LOX inhibitors with information-value coefficients r- 0.1 that were found using models Ml and M2 in addition... [Pg.257]

TABLE 22.7 Cyclic Descriptors Characteristic of High- and Medium-Efficiency 5-LOX Inhibitors... [Pg.258]

It was established that descriptors such as hydroxyl and methyl groups and O and Br atoms were most characteristic of functional groups for medium-efficiency 5-LOX inhibitors. Simple acyclic descriptors such as a... [Pg.259]

It should be noted that combinations of 1,3,5-trisubstituted benzene (ring 238 in Fig. 22.2) with N-, 0-, and S-containing cyclic and acyclic descriptors were characteristic of medium-efficiency 5-LOX inhibitors. An analysis of the effect of the surroundings on the efficiency of 5-LOX inhibition in terms of model M2 showed that sequential combination of a tertiary N atom with ethylene and azamethine groups was encountered primarily in the high-efficiency class of compounds. However, its combination with ethylene and carbonyl groups was characteristic of medium- and low-efficiency compounds (Fig. 22.3). [Pg.260]

A single-stage system using a low or medium efficiency filter has the lowest capital cost but, as stated, will not filter very fine contaminants. A multi-stage system will filter virtually all atmospheric pollution but at higher capital investment. The filter cost itself will be low, because the cheaper primary filters prolong the life of, and protect, the more expensive filters. [Pg.372]
