Mechanochemical effects

Techniques for evaluating processing stabiHty and mechanochemical effects include using a Brabender torque rheometer (29,30), injection mol ding (26,28), capillary rheometry (26,28), and measuring melt index as a function of residence time (26). [Pg.203]

Extension of these studies to the polymer in solution and the measurement of the attendant decrease in molar mass showed that it was the chain length which was important, not the solid-state properties. In particular the solid-state studies showed that there was a critical molar mass before mechanochemical effects could be observed (for polyethylene (PE), a degree of polymerization of about 100). In solution a similar effect was observed since the degradation of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) could not continue when the chain length reached about 4000 repeat units (Sohma, 1989a, 1989b). This was shown by a slow decrease in molar mass to the asymptotic value as shown in Figure 1 -39. [Pg.129]

A simple concentration consideration alone is difficult to explain the above phenomenon. It is possible that the associated, liquid-like water can build a strong osmotic pressure at the interface that will stress the oxane bonds. The oxane bonds at the interface will be subjected to stress. When a tensile stress is applied to the bond, the mechanochemical effect lowers the apparent activation energy of the hydrolysis of the oxane bonds, making it easier to be hydrolytically cleaved. The aforementioned differences in the hydrothermal stability of various oxane bonds may become especially important under such circumstances, ily cleaved, non-siloxane bonds may become the source of water collection and exert pressure on the surrounding siloxane bonds, which will be cleaved easier than the siloxane bonds with pure silica surface. [Pg.197]

It is the value of n in equation (4.2) that is used to express a measure of the ISE of a material. Equation (1.6) gives the relationship of Vickers hardness to load, and for there to be no dependence of hardness on indentation size, n in equation (4.2) must equal 2. When hardness changes as the half diagonal a decreases, then clearly the relationship between P and a is not simple and n will not equal 2. Deviations from n = 2.0 are then a measure of the ISE effect and for a given ceramic, variations in n will be a measure of microstructural variations, surface layers, surface chemistry, or mechanochemical effects. [Pg.67]

The influence of mechanochemical effects (MCEs) and creep on corrosion parameters were studied by Bonora et al. (2002). They stated that deformation increases the anodic current densities and shifting the potentials to more active values. It was also shown that the AZ91D alloy has a high corrosion rate in the deformed state than AM50 alloy under stress, while in the nonloading state the corrosion rate was found to be higher for the AM50 alloy. This behavior confirms the MCE theory and the behavior of these alloys at creep. [Pg.80]

A novel variant on ambient grinding technologies was described by Asadauskas and co-workers [15] at the Tire Technology 2014 event in Cologne. In this high-shear process, both mechanochemically effective and tribologically effective additives are employed. These additives are claimed to provide the following twin benefits ... [Pg.152]
