Mechanical integrity pressure testing

Some toll processes lend themselves to test runs in the pre-startup phase. Actual materials for the toll may be used in the test or substitute materials, typically with low hazard potential, are often used to simulate the charging, reaction, and physical changes to be accomplished in the toll. Flow control, temperature control, pressure control, mixing and transferring efficiency can be measured. Mechanical integrity can be verified in regard to pumps, seals, vessels, heat exchangers, and safety devices. 

The repaired reboiler was mounted in the normal vertical position, when the employees decided to hydrostatically test the unit at the conclusion of the repairs. Despite the common assumption of fault sealing in hydrocarbon fields, very few faults have been characterised in the detail needed which allows identification of the sealing mechanism or controls. Without the construction of a robust set of case histories from such analysis, future seal evaluation will remain a high risk venture. These case histories are also needed to integrate seal behaviour with pressure test, production and in situ stress analysis. The paper has highlighted the importance of an integrated approach from micro to macro and stressed the value of core-based studies to quantify fault rock properties, sub-seismic fault populations and sealing mechanisms. 

After the mechanical integrity of each system has been proved, it is flushed through very thoroughly and drained out. The instrument air supply manifold is normally pneumatically tested. It is essential to blow the air supply pipework through very thoroughly after pressure testing to remove all pipe debris.
