Just at the time construction work in No. 20 District was coming to a close, agitation from the RAOC in favour of belt conveyors for ammunition transport was having some success. By way of experiment, the trough belt conveyor installed in the slope-shaft for waste disposal was converted to a flat belt to carry ammunition. Three additional Mccco conveyors from the batch purchased for assessment trials were installed in the district in time for the hand-over in September, 1939.

Take-Ups. A take-up is requited on a belt conveyor to ensure the proper belt tension at the drive pulley and along the conveyor, as weU as to ensure the proper troughing contour between idlers. A take-up is also needed to compensate for changes in belt length caused by elastic stretch during start-up, and any elongation characteristics of the belt that occur over a period of time.

Screw conveyors, also called worm conveyors, are used for materials that are free flowing. The basic principle of the screw conveyor has been known since the time of Archimedes. The modem conveyor consists of a helical screw rotating in a U-shaped trough. They can be used horizontally or, with some loss of capacity, at an incline to lift materials. Screw conveyors are less efficient than belt conveyors, due to the friction between the solids and the flights of the screw and the trough, but are cheaper and easier to maintain. They are used to convey solids over short distances, and when some elevation (lift) is required. They can also be used for delivering a metered flow of solids.
