Trimmed mean

If these assumptions are satisfied then the ideas developed earlier about the mean free path can be used to provide qualitative but useful estimates of the transport properties of a dilute gas. While many varied and complicated processes can take place in fluid systems, such as turbulent flow, pattern fonnation, and so on, the principles on which these flows are analysed are remarkably simple. The description of both simple and complicated flows m fluids is based on five hydrodynamic equations, die Navier-Stokes equations. These equations, in trim, are based upon the mechanical laws of conservation of particles, momentum and energy in a fluid, together with a set of phenomenological equations, such as Fourier s law of themial conduction and Newton s law of fluid friction. When these phenomenological laws are used in combination with the conservation equations, one obtains the Navier-Stokes equations. Our goal here is to derive the phenomenological laws from elementary mean free path considerations, and to obtain estimates of the associated transport coefficients. Flere we will consider themial conduction and viscous flow as examples. [Pg.671]

If a motor car has to be refinished after repair, commonsense suggests that the original finishing system would be ideal for maintenance of protection and durability. However, with tyres, upholstery, fabric and plastic trim fitted and petrol in the tank, the use of such high stoving temperatures is not practical. The practical upper temperature limit is 80°C. This means that none of the original materials is suitable, not even the acrylic lacquer, since this is designed to be sanded and the scratches reflowed at 155 C. [Pg.627]

Fig. 8. Calculated values of (top) /(0), (center) /(75), and (bottom) J (653) for acid-unfolded apoMb, pH 2.3, 25°C. The horizontal lines show the mean values of J (75) (0.19 ns rad-1) and /(653) (0.020 ns rad-1), and the 10% trimmed mean value of J (0) (0.97 ns rad-1). The average buried surface area, calculated using the values of Rose and co-workers (Rose et al., 1985) and averaged over a seven-residue window, is also shown in the center figure (solid line, no data points, right-hand scale). Black bars indicate the positions of the helices in the folded structure of myoglobin. Fig. 8. The whole tissue processing from fixation to embedding in paraffin can be performed manually or automated by means of processing machines. Cutting of paraffin-embedded tissues is performed by means of microtomes. Trimmed paraffin blocks are cut at 3 10 pm (5 pm is commonly used). [Pg.23]

Robust Statistics use trimmed data for the calculation of the estimated values. That means, that a part of the data set in the tails is excluded or modified prior to or during the calculation. An easy example is the use of the interquartile range (the range between the first and the third quartile) instead of the whole data set. [Pg.315]

Statistical Analysis. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) of toxicity data was conducted using SAS/STAT software (version 8.2 SAS Institute, Cary, NC). All toxicity data were transformed (square root, log, or rank) before ANOVA. Comparisons among multiple treatment means were made by Fisher s LSD procedure, and differences between individual treatments and controls were determined by one-tailed Dunnett s or Wilcoxon tests. Statements of statistical significance refer to a probability of type 1 error of 5% or less (p s 0.05). Median lethal concentrations (LCjq) were determined by the Trimmed Spearman-Karber method using TOXSTAT software (version 3.5 Lincoln Software Associates, Bisbee, AZ). [Pg.96]

This involves weighing moulding compounds for manufacturing the insole. The moulding compounds are mixed and rolled by means of a roller to form a sheet material, which is then cut into elongated strips. A predetermined amount of the strips are placed into a first mould unit, which is heated and pressurised to form a partially foamed insole. The partially foamed insole is placed into a second mould unit, which is heated, pressurised and cooled to form a completely foamed insole, which is then trimmed. [Pg.51]

There is often a particular concern for the effects of outliers or heavy-tailed distributions when using standard statistical techniques. To address this type of a situation, a parametric approach would be to use ML estimation assuming a heavy-tailed distribution (perhaps a Student t distribution with few degrees of freedom). However, simple ad hoc methods such as trimmed means may be useful. There is a large statistical literature on robust and outlier-resistant methods, (e.g., Hoaglin et al. 1983 Barnett and Lewis 1994). [Pg.39]

All of the foregoing calculations are simply to trim the data set by removing outliers in accordance with the set criteria. All that remains is to calculate the mean value for the sample, the repeatability and reproducibility of the trialled method and the HORRAT ratio. These values can be calculated using a one way ANOVA method similar to that described in Table 29 and given in Table 33 and the final values in Table 34. [Pg.75]

A database such as this is also important where valve interchangeability is required in order to determine a minimum stockholding for maintenance purposes. Valves of similar body and trim materials can possibly be utilized in many different locations and services, thus removing the need for one-to-one valve stocking. This system will also mean that valves can easily be sourced from non-essential systems in order to maintain essential system viability. [Pg.236]

The combination of a double-layer deposit of nickel and either micro-cracked or micro-porous chromium provides the very best system of protection available by these means. Plastics components intended for particularly demanding applications (including exterior trim on the most expensive cars), are finished to such specifications. [Pg.180]

The mixed wood and bark residues burned directly are collectively termed hog fuel. Over the past decade, there has been a trend to channel more and more of the cleaner, drier, and larger-sized mill residues into raw materials for products. The coarse wood residues (slabs, trim, edgings, etc.) are chipped and sent to pulp mills. Also, considerable sawdust now is being pulped instead of being burned for fuel. Some of the residues, including shavings, also are used for particleboard. This means that hog fuel contains the less desirable, dirtier, and wetter forms of waste. [Pg.1274]
