Coarse wood

The mixed wood and bark residues burned directly are collectively termed hog fuel. Over the past decade, there has been a trend to channel more and more of the cleaner, drier, and larger-sized mill residues into raw materials for products. The coarse wood residues (slabs, trim, edgings, etc.) are chipped and sent to pulp mills. Also, considerable sawdust now is being pulped instead of being burned for fuel. Some of the residues, including shavings, also are used for particleboard. This means that hog fuel contains the less desirable, dirtier, and wetter forms of waste. [Pg.1274]

Insulation board, rigid- A structural building board made of coarse wood or cane fiber in 2- and 25/32-inch thickness. It can be obtained in various size sheets and densities. [Pg.255]

Specific gravity is direcdy related to the bulk density of waste fuels prepared ia a variety of ways. Solid oven-dry (OD) wood, for example, has a typical bulk density of 48.1 kg/m (301b/ft ). In coarse hogged form, eg, <1.9-cm minor dimension, this bulk density declines to about24kg/m (151b/ft ). In pulverized form, at a particle size <0.16 cm, this bulk density declines to 16—19 kg/m (10—12 Ib/ft ). Similar relationships hold for municipal waste, agricultural wastes, and related fuels. [Pg.54]

Herbal drugs are available in coarsely to finely chopped forms, as cut or concis" drugs leaves often appear on the market cut into four-sided fragments woods, roots, and barks as chips most fruits and seeds usually unbroken, in the whole or toto " condition, and they are sometimes crushed before being used. The extent of comminution plays an important part in the preparation of herbal infusions (see below Making the Tea). [Pg.12]

The burning of slash following deforestation, whether intentional or unintentional, results in far greater direct and indirect losses of nutrients than deforestation alone. This is particularly true in many tropical forests where only a small fraction (if any) of the aboveground biomass is removed prior to burning. Carbon losses from slash fires in the tropical dry forest were 4-5 fold greater than C losses from wood export (Table IV) (55). Slash fires in tropical dry forests resulted in N losses of 428-500 kg ha whereas fuel wood export of the relatively N-poor coarse woody debris amounted to approximately 41 kg N ha" Losses of P increase with increasing fire severity. P losses of 10-77 kg ha" as a result of severe fires is not uncommon (Table TV) (53, 58, 60). [Pg.439]

For solid wastes to be suitable as a full or partial replacement for components in other applications, it should be free of objectionable material such as wood, garbage, and metal that can be introduced at the foundry. It should be free of foreign material and thick coatings of burnt carbon, binders, and mold additives that could inhibit product manufacture, such as cement hydration. It may be necessary to crush the solid waste to reduce the size of oversized core butts or unclasped molds. Magnetic separation is a good solution to producing a suitable coarse or fine aggregate product. [Pg.191]

Bleached or unbleached kraft process wood pulp usually converted into paperboard, coarse papers, tissue papers, and fine papers such as business, writing and printing... [Pg.860]

Coarse-grade municipal compost (recycled green waste), which is quicker to degrade than bark or wood chips. For perennial beds only. [Pg.72]

Substrate types characterizing these habitats included surfaces of dead coral, fine and coarse sands, organically rich mud-sand mixtures, wood and steel surfaces on wrecked ships, algal mats, attached macroalgae, and seagrass beds. Water depths at the various sites ranged from 0.2 to 25 meters. [Pg.228]
