Professor Clifford L Henderson is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers the American Chemical Society, the International Society for Optical Engineering, the Materials Research Society, and the Electrochemical Society. He has authored more than 125 papers and holds 9 patents in areas related to his research. Dr. Henderson s research interests are in the areas of polymer science, thin films, nanotechnology, organic electronic materials, and miaosystem processing (i.e., the fabrication of microelectronic, optoelectronic, microfluidic, and microelectromechanical systems). [Pg.76]

Ultra-high vacuum (UHV) surface science methods allow preparation and characterization of perfectly clean, well ordered surfaces of single crystalline materials. By preparing pairs of such surfaces it is possible to fonn interfaces under highly controlled conditions. Furthennore, thin films of adsorbed species can be produced and characterized using a wide variety of methods. Surface science methods have been coupled with UHV measurements of macroscopic friction forces. Such measurements have demonstrated that adsorbate film thicknesses of a few monolayers are sufficient to lubricate metal surfaces [12, 181. [Pg.2747]

The importance of materials science to U.S. competitiveness can hardly be overstated. Key materials science areas underlie virtually every facet of modem life. Semiconductors underpin our electronics industry. Optical fibers are essential for communications. Superconducting materials will probably affect many areas ceramics, composites, and thin films are having a big impact now in transportation, construction, manufacturing, and even in sports—tennis rackets are an example. [Pg.17]
