In Chapter 17, we introduce "electronic organic materials". The goal there is to describe new structures with novel electronic properties. These structures can be put to use as conducting or magnetic materials, and even organic superconductors. We will return to the interaction of light with matter in Chapter 17 when we describe photoresists and non-linear optics. 

While the intellectual importance of polyacetylene is undeniable, the technological importance is less so. The material is insoluble, brittle, and thus difficult to process. Recall that a key promise of electronic organic materials is to combine the facile synthesis and process-ability features of organic polymers with novel electronic properties. Polyacetylene does not quite meet the goal.
